Baam always wished to follow Rachel and be with her forever. Rachel on the other hand, always wished to climb the tower and see the stars at the top.
With these two conflicting desires, there had to be a breaking point. This point was reached in the final test when Rachel pushed Baam to his death just when victory was in sight.
In the final test called Deep-Sea Fish Herding, Baam and Rachel, after defeating the bull, are heading towards the Queen and are close to victory. At this moment, Rachel pushes Baam out of the bubble.
Baam falls and is proclaimed dead. However, Rachel’s betrayal has a greater purpose behind it. When Baam falls, he does not die but is instead picked up and forcefully recruited by the FUG organization.
1. Does Baam die in Tower of God?
After the floor administrators’ approval, Baam and Rachel were allowed to take a new test along with the other regulars. The test given to them was called Deep-Sea Fish Herding.
Here, the other regulars had to protect the Goby Dolphin’s so that they could safely catch Baam and Rachel in their net and transport them out through their Queen’s mouth.
During the final phase of this test just when victory is in sight, Rachel pushes Baam out of the bubble. He is seen falling from great heights, and survival does not seem probable.
However, Rachel’s betrayal has a higher purpose behind it. When Baam falls, he does not die but is instead picked up and forcefully recruited by the FUG organization.
2. How did Rachel betray Baam?
The answer to this question is still not clear in the webtoon. If we look at things as they seem, then yes the answer seems evident. However there is more to it than meets the eye.
Rachel did betray Baam by pushing him out of the bubble while they were underwater and lying about her leg injuty to Baam who only wanted to be with her. Rachel led him to join FUG forcibly. The reason behind her actions was a deal she made with Headon.
However, Baam became what he is today because of the help from FUG and Rachel’s betrayal. He found a purpose and became stronger because of it. Whether Rachel has this planned from the beginning to motivate Baam to climb the tower and become powerful is not known.
3. The reason why Rachel betrays Baam
Rachel betrayed Baam because she wanted to reach the top of the tower and see the stars. She desired to become a heroine of her own story. However, Baam’s existence and his insistence on following her foiled her plans.
She felt as if Baam had taken everything away from her. These feelings led her to make a deal with Headon and betray Baam.
Rachel’s deal with Headon
In the beginning, Rachel left Baam to climb the tower and see the starry night as she was afraid of the dark. But unfortunately, she could not open the tower. She slipped in when it was opening for Baam.
Once inside, she refused to take part in Headons test, and when he said that she was not meant to climb the tower. To keep climbing the tower, she made a deal with Headon.
Part of the specifics of the deal was revealed when she attempted murder by pushing Baam out of the bubble during the final test despite him doing his best to protect her.
Her deal consisted of her forcing Baam into the FUG organization. What she was promised for keeping her end of the deal was being made into a heroine of the story.
4. About Tower of God
Tower of God is a South Korean web-toon written and drawn by Lee Jong-hui, also known by the pen-name SIU.
The story revolves around a boy named Baam. Baam only has one person that he loves and cares about, and that is his friend Rachel. When Rachel goes into the Tower, Baam follows her. Rachel vanishes, and thus Baam starts his journey to get her back.
