Here’s an update about Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary Special that’s getting fans wishing they had a TARDIS right about now!
Yasmin Finney, who joined the cast of Doctor Who Season 14 as Rose Temple-Noble, has shared some details about her upcoming character, which has developed an interesting theory.
The latest addition to the longtime running show will release sometime in 2023, and details about Season 14 have been scarce. So, any new update only adds more intrigue to the season’s premiere and the fans’ excitement.
Returning characters include fan favorites David Tenant’s Tenth Doctor and Catherine Tate’s companion Donna Noble. New additions include Finney’s Rose and Ncuti Gatwa’s Fourteenth Doctor, making him the first Black Time Lord in the show’s history.
Gatwa’s casting is not the only decision the new season has made to fit the show better into the modern era. Yasmin Finney, who also starred in Netflix’s Heartstopper, is playing a trans woman in the upcoming season and has called her character a trans icon.
In her conversation with Queerpiphany on MTV UK, Finney mentioned her character’s age and family situation, adding more interest to her new character.
She is a 15-year-old trans girl with a great, supportive family. Envision Heartstopper, but fighting aliens.
People might be confused about the comparison to Heartstopper. But both shows have highlighted the exploration of one’s identity and making family outside of blood based on circumstances. Maybe the statement does make sense, after all.
But here’s the interesting bit. Finney’s character has been rumored to be a new version of the beloved fan-favorite companion Rose Tyler, previously played by Billie Piper.
But her last name, “Noble,” suggests that she might be Donna Noble’s daughter. Or maybe she is not a parallel version of Rose, nor is she Donna’s daughter, but a whole new character.
If she were Donna Noble’s daughter, it’d make sense that Donna would raise her daughter in a more loving and caring home, one that she was not herself granted in her younger life.
Maybe having Donna as her mother might not be a far-fetched theory, given Rose’s last name, Donna’s return in Season 14, and the latest details by Finney.
Nevertheless, Doctor Who’s active participation in giving representation to communities that have been overlooked in past times has been labeled a good start for the upcoming instalment.
