What is in store for the Sorcerer Supreme? Doctor Strange 2 writer Michael Waldron dishes out on taking on the baton for writing Stephen Strange for the screens and the character’s upcoming evolution.
Dr. Stephen Strange has all but one movie released to his moniker so far. Since then, we have seen him in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Strange, will reprise his role for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home, and of course, the new solo movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Strange has played a vital role in all his appearances, which is not lost on his comrades as well as the fans.
We are still reeling from the grand entry of superheroes into the battlefield in Avengers: Endgame, who, of course, couldn’t be transported there without Doctor Strange.
In a long-running cinematic universe like the MCU, the devil is in the details as characters get passed through several directors and writers in the course of different movies.
Consistency, thus, became key for writer Michael Waldron, who has taken over for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, set to release on March 25, 2022.
In an interview with GQ, Waldron talks about how he is standing on the shoulders of two giants—a nod to his current role as creator and writer of Disney+’s Loki.
There is no doubt that both Doctor Strange and Loki have been refined by the hands of previous writers and directors, which Waldron himself admits, now that he handles both the characters.
“Certainly, in the first Doctor Strange movie, the work that [director] Scott Derrickson did with [writers] Jon Spaiths and C. Robert Cargill, those guys told an amazing origin story for Doctor Strange that was one of my favorite MCU movies.
That was the intro of this character into the MCU, so you want to continue that voice. I think also [writers Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, the work they did with Strange in Infinity War—which feels like Doctor Strange 1.5 to me.”

Waldron is set to leave his own mark on the characters. Likening the task to that of comic book writers of the yesteryears, he talks about how the opportunity was a valuable inheritance from its predecessors.
As they say, with great power comes great responsibility, which in Waldron’s case, he says is, “Our job is to not sell out what they did, but at the same time take chances and make them our own, because that’s what the great creators who came before us, did.”
“So, that’s how I approached it—with reverence—but hopefully a little bit of fearlessness as well.”
Might this “fearlessness” take shape in the new Doctor Strange movie?
Waldron does admit that the project had immense freedom in its storytelling and visuals, with Marvel’s permission to “Make the most kickass Dr. Strange movie you can possibly make.” He adds that with a director like Sam Raimi on board, you cannot go wrong.
