From Nightmare to the Elder God Chthon, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has a long list of villains as per the rumor mill, but the latest of them suggests that Shuma-Gorath could just be the one.
A new report claims that an unexpected villain Shuma-Gorath is set to take center stage in Marvel’s Doctor Strange 2. According to The Illuminerdi, the Marvel Comics supervillain will serve as the “primary antagonist” of the Doctor Strange sequel.
Last week, insider Daniel Richtman shared on his Patreon account that Marvel Studios is planning on using Doctor Strange villain Shuma-Gorath in an unspecified future Marvel project.
Apparently, the Elder God is pursuing the reality-jumping America Chavez because he wants to take control of her. He wants to use her powers to gain complete control of the Multiverse.
Existing across dimensions and planes, Shuma-Gorath typically appears as a knotted mess of green tentacles and eyes, on the rare occasions that he does appear on Earth. It’s unclear who would voice this character in Doctor Strange, assuming they’re in it, but it will offer the chance for some choice dialogue from the villain.
Shuma-Gorath was brought into the Marvel Comics fold back in 1972. The figure was initially a Doctor Strange villain, making its debut in Marvel Premiere.
Shuma-Gorath is damn near invincible and is the ruler of nearly a hundred alternate universes. Some of the figure’s abilities include energy projection, shapeshifting, teleportation, levitation, and altering reality. All of that does seem to fit the bill for a movie that is going to explore the multiverse of madness.
It’s possible Marvel Studios will switch Shuma-Gorath up a bit for the MCU, merging him with his fellow Elder God Chthon.
In the comics, Chthon left behind a book of forbidden magic, the Darkhold, and every time it is used, the fabric of reality is weakened. He’s also tied to the Scarlet Witch, as the secret source of her Chaos Magic.
WandaVision retconned the MCU’s Wanda Maximoff as the Scarlet Witch and even ended with her in possession of the Darkhold. It thus seems intriguing that WandaVision set up with the Elder God, though we have now had reports of a very different—even more intimidating—one being involved in Doctor Strange 2.
Marvel could have taken a different route, of combining the two similar characters and concepts—and that would perhaps mean that the Scarlet Witch is an antagonist as well, bound to serve Shuma-Gorath’s will, rather than repeating similar ideas.
Multiverse of Madness has completed filming.
Ultimately, this essentially creates an emotional confrontation between Wanda and Strange in the movie, with the rest of the multiverse hanging in the balance. Right now, all we can do is wait. And as The Multiverse of Madness has already completed filming, it shouldn’t be a long one.
