New official art for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gives fans the first look at what to expect from the sequel. The art poster was posted by Adam Khan on Twitter and was reportedly given as a wrap gift to the cast and crew of the project.
The art reveals Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch’s new costumes. Strange’s new suit is more accurate to the comics, and Wanda’s new costume has full sleeves.
It also has Doctor Strange, Wong, and Scarlet Witch in front of America Chavez’s signature star-shaped portals. Assuming that this is the basic concept that the film was worked upon, it is obvious that these portals are how the team travels through the Multiverse.
According to the comics, America Chavez was born on the Utopian Parallel, a paradisal dimension outside of time and space of the Multiverse and in the presence of the Demiurge. She appeared to have inherited/absorbed her superpowers from the Demiurge’s ambient magical presence, enabling her wilful traversal through the Multiverse and incredible superhuman potential.
America Chavez inherits multiple powers like flight, super strength, invulnerability, cosmic awareness, and star-shaped portals. She can create and destroy the portals to open up gateways to different universes.
Based on the art, it seems that she will play an important part in the film’s multiverse-traveling aspect. The comics have shown her use these abilities to travel through time as well, so America’s portals could have multiple purposes in the film.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will have Benedict Cumberbatch return as the future Sorcerer Supreme. He’ll be joined by Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who transformed into the Scarlet Witch in WandaVision’s finale.
The film also includes characters from the first film, including Christine Palmer, Wong, and Mordo. The last time we saw Mordo, he took away Jonathan Pangborn’s powers because he thinks there are far too many sorcerers. This sets him up as Strange’s archnemesis in the film. The only new character confirmed so far is America Chavez.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Rami, who took over after Scott Derrickson left due to creative differences. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has its release date set for March 25, 2022.
