Do you need a PS Plus subscription to play God of War: Ragnarok?

God of War: Ragnarok releases tomorrow, and fans are already gearing up for its launch. With the increase in live-service titles and live-service elements even in single-player games, many players are worried if God of War: Ragnarok will require PS Plus to enjoy.

God of War: Ragnarok will fortunately not require PS Plus to play on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It is a solely single-player narrative-driven experience and won’t require an online service like PS Plus to run it, so fans can rest easy.

However, the PS Plus Premium subscription includes all the original God of War games, and the PS Plus Extra Tier has God of War (2018) included in it. So, if you want to play the whole series to catch up with the lore, a PS Plus subscription is surely not a bad way to do so.

Will God of War: Ragnarok come to PS Plus?

Kratos VS Thor in God of War Ragnarok

God of War: Ragnarok will not be available on any PS Plus subscription tier on launch. Sony has already stated that players shouldn’t expect first-party and third-party games to go directly on PS Plus as soon as they launch. But that’s not to say that God of War: Ragnarok won’t ever be available on PS Plus.

Some games like Fall Guys and Stray came to PS Plus the day they launched. The PS Plus subscription doesn’t work like Xbox’s Game Pass subscription, where first-party games are available to play on day 1 if you have a Game Pass subscription. But if you have a PS Plus subscription and are craving some God of War games, then you can play the previous games in the series through the subscription.

About God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok is an action-adventure game developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released on November 9, 2022, for PS4 and PS5.

Ragnarok is the ninth installment in the God of War series, chronologically, and the sequel to 2018’s God of War. Loosely based on Norse mythology, the game is set in ancient Norway and features series protagonists Kratos and his young son Atreus. The events of the game are expected to initiate Ragnarok – a series of events that, according to Norse lore, bring about the end of days and the death of the Norse gods.
