While Maeve and Otis can be the talk of the town, Ruby and Otis are not far behind in the list of most popular couple on Sex Education! A large section of the show’s fans rooted for Ruby and Otis to end up with each other. In fact, many even prefer them over Maeve and Otis. However, the ending disappoints both sets of shippers.
Ruby and Otis do not end up together in the Sex Education finale. The two spend some time together during season 4 but never share a proper romantic moment.
While Otis continues to be in love with Maeve in the season finale, Ruby finally manages to become friends with the popular kids at Cavendish College after struggling to fit in for a long time. Otis, however, ends up with neither Ruby nor Maeve. Both Ruby and Otis end up single by the end of the show.
1. Otis and Ruby’s Season 4 Storyline Explained
Ruby and Otis do not date again in season 4 after their brief relationship in season 3. The two, however, remain good friends for a while in the final season.
In season 4, the students of Moordale shift to a new school called Cavendish College, which is way different from their previous orthodox school. Cavendish College is more accepting of everyone, a safe space for all sexualities, and much more friendly. However, Ruby struggles to fit into the crowd because of her insecurities and need to look better than others.
When Otis decides to compete with O for the position of student counselor, Ruby decides to help Otis. Apart from Otis being one of her only friends in the college, she sees this as an opportunity to fit into the crowd and take revenge on O for bullying her as a child.
Ruby and Otis spend some together in Ruby’s house while preparing for the election. After Otis gets uninvited by Eric for a party they had planned to go to, he decides to stay at Ruby’s house and spend quality time together.
Though there was a repressed romantic tension throughout the episode, nothing happened between them. Otis and Ruby fell asleep on the same bed while watching a film, which ended up making Otis uncomfortable due to his long-distance situation-ship with Maeve.
As a result, Otis ends up ghosting Ruby and does not respond to her calls or texts. In other words, the entire season 3 storyline is repeated all over again. In case you don’t remember, Ruby told Otis that she loves him in season 3, but Otis did not reciprocate her feelings, leading to their breakup.
The two still try to work together for the elections for a short time, but Otis messes it up again. He constantly reminds Ruby that nothing happened between them, although Ruby never claimed anything did. He tells her to remember this while speaking to Maeve so that she doesn’t assume that Ruby and Otis are more than friends. This hurts Ruby, and she decides not to help Otis anymore.
2. Why Ruby and Otis Weren’t Endgame in Sex Education
Ruby and Otis do not end up together in Sex Education as they were never meant to be. Though Ruby had feelings for Otis for a while, Otis never reciprocated her feelings. Since the beginning of the show, he has always been in love with Maeve despite briefly dating others.
In season 3, Otis does not reciprocate Ruby’s feelings as he realizes he is still in love with Maeve. He even gets together with Maeve at the end of season 3. However, Maeve leaves for America in the season 3 finale.
In season 4, Maeve and Otis continue their long-distance relationship. Naturally, things don’t work out with Ruby once again. So, though Ruby and Otis shared great chemistry in the series and also had great potential together, they were never meant to be.
Also, I personally think Otis treated Ruby very badly, so it is a brave decision on Ruby’s part not to lose her self-respect and go after Otis again.
3. Otis Treats Ruby Horribly in Sex Education
As we know, Ruby and Otis began their relationship in season 3. Otis has sex for the first time with Ruby back in season 2, though they do not begin dating. At the beginning of season 3, we get to know that the two have been having casual sex throughout the summer.
Things don’t work out for Ruby and Otis in season 3, as Otis does not reciprocate when Ruby confesses her feelings to him. In fact, though at first, it seems like Ruby is mistreating Otis, it is actually Otis who treats her horribly over the course of seasons 3 and 4.
In season 3, Ruby and Otis were in a casual, sexual relationship until Otis told Ruby that he wanted more from her. It was he who insisted that Ruby treats him like her boyfriend and not a random sex partner.
Ruby shared his feelings and began dating him. But he turned his back on her when she started developing real feelings for him. It is very much a typical annoying male-lead thing to do if you ask me. If he knew he was in love with Maeve, he should not have dated Ruby, led her on, and then hurt her. Is it that difficult?
In season 4, Otis repeats a similar pattern. He asks for Ruby’s help and uses her to get better PR in the elections, and when things don’t work out, he ghosts her and treats her awfully because his girlfriend is back in town.
Ruby never insisted that something happened between the two. She never even tried to get back with Otis, but he kept bringing it up. When Ruby asks if he can help Otis with the campaign, he keeps reminding her he is with Maeve. When Maeve returns to Moordale, he ghosts Ruby for no reason and insists that they are no more than friends. Again, no one claimed they were. It was Otis’s own insecurity about Maeve that led him to treat others so badly.
4. Who do Otis and Ruby end up with Sex Education?
Both Ruby and Otis remain single at the end of the series. Otis remains single after Maeve leaves for America. In the finale, he is clearly still in love with Maeve.
On the other hand, Ruby does not have any love interest at the end of the series either. She only wanted to make some friends in her new school. In the finale, she is accepted by the popular kids, Abbi, Roman, and Aisha, in their group.
Otis apologizes to Ruby in the finale for mistreating her and asks if they can be friends. However, Ruby does not seem very keen as she says she “already has enough friends now”.
