Update 1.21 was released by Massive Entertainment for The Division 2 in a bid to provide a high-quality gaming experience for PS5 and Xbox series players. Unfortunately, players have reported that the PS5 version is broken and has somehow decreased the overall graphics of the game. The developers are, however, aware of this problem and stated in a Reddit thread that they are working on a fix.
As with many next-gen game updates, the new release allows the game to recognize when it is running on a next-gen console and apply changes to its resolution and other graphical options. The Division 2 scales between 900p and 1080p on the Xbox Series S and the Xbox Series X is capable of running it at 1800p to 4K resolutions.
On the PS5 the game outputs 1080p to 1890 pixel range. All consoles have 60 fps unlocked, but experts noticed 5-9 fps drops on average on Xbox Series X due to the highest resolution rates amongst all platforms.
The Division 2 utilizes a powerful Snowdrop engine with some stellar graphics and those seem to be barely changed on next-gen consoles. For some unknown reason, the PS5 is missing out on screen-space reflections and volumetric fog, which made the game look flat and toneless compared to the PS4 Pro. It may be a glitch, as the PS5 version of The Division 2 uses cube mapping which is not presented even on Xbox One.
Load speed tests also showed that the PS5 was left behind by other platforms, a surprise considering the blazing fast SSD the PS5 has on board. And finally, there is a black level issue on PS5, making the game look extremely dark in certain scenes. In comparison, the Xbox Series X receives far superior texture filtering.
But worry not PS5 owners, the studio has promised that all the mentioned issues will be fixed in the near future. They also stated that the game would receive general updates on all platforms till 2022.
Massive Entertainment is also working on two AAA titles, one being an Avatar project expected alongside James Cameron’s movie and the other being an open-world Star Wars project. So, we can expect some massive announcements from Massive Entertainment very soon.
