Academy Award nominee Scarlett Johansson is set to produce and star in Disney’s upcoming Tower of Terror movie. As Black Widow will mark her last appearance in the MCU, the venture will see the celebrated actress start a new chapter in Hollywood.
According to an exclusive report by Collider, Johansson will helm both roles in the film’s making and will not only hold an acting part but will also overlook the project as a producer. Toy Story 4 director and Inside Out writer Josh Cooley has been tapped to write the screenplay.
No director has been officially selected for the movie, but Disney plans to “aim high.” Johansson will be producing Tower of Terror via her These Pictures banner. Jonathan Lia will also serve as an additional producer.
Based on the famous Disney park ride, it is known to feature plenty of thrilling attractions, including a thirteen-story free-fall elevator drop. Although the adaptation’s plot details remain unknown as of now, producer Jim Whitaker and screenwriter John August revealed at the beginning of their attachment to the project in 2015 that the story would involve “five people in a posh hotel take an elevator and disappear after it is hit by lightning.”
But it’s currently unclear whether Disney is moving ahead with this idea or looking for new pitches; however, considering this is the general premise of the Tower of Terror ride, Cooley could most likely work off of the basic concept. The ride also features elements of The Twilight Zone, which will probably be added into the film as well.
The Tower of Terror ride was first adapted as a TV Movie in 1997 and starred Steven Guttenberg and Kirsten Dunst. It was the first park attraction to be adapted into a movie and thus became a pioneer in the field.
Another such adaptation soon hitting screens is Dwayne Johnson-starring Jungle Cruise, based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name. It is slated for release on July 30.
Following the massive success of Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean, Disney has been interested in making movies based on other popular rides. Now, with Johansson getting attached to the project, Tower of Terror may just become Disney’s next hit.
