You know you’ve touched success when one of your greatest rivals stops and comments on a job well done. Seems like Universal was just awarded this high honor as Disney CEO Bob Iger went out of his way to praise the box-office performance of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
Reported by Video Games Chronicle, Bob Iger mentioned the successful theatrical run of the computer-animated film. He added that it gives other studios a “reason to be optimistic about the movie business.” Read his complete statement below:
Allow me to digress for a moment to congratulate Universal for the tremendous success of Super Mario Bros. It certainly proves people love to be entertained in theaters around the world, and it gives us reason to be optimistic about the movie business.
The animated film might not have been a clear winner in the eyes of critics. Still, the general audience certainly loved the movie, considering it is currently the highest-grossing production of 2023.
The $1 billion grossing paints a promising picture for other production houses about the willingness of the common cinemagoer to watch films on the big screen – a change from their usual schedule of Netflix and Chill, no double entendre intended.
The movie’s commercial success spells a good year for upcoming pictures like “Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Wish,” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
With audiences more willing to dive back into the cinematic experience of watching a film on the big screen, studios like Disney and Universal are more inclined to shoot their projects for longer theatrical runs.
What say you? Is Bob Iger right when he says the average cinema lover is ready to ditch the comfort of their homes and travel to the nearest theater to enjoy a weekly film? Drop your comments on the matter below!
