The current Disney CEO, Bob Chapek, renews his contract for an additional three years even after having dealt with numerous controversies during his tenure.
Making his way to the head of Disney, Bob Chapek rose to his current position from the offices of the Home Entertainment Division and Parks, Experience, and Products. He got the job in 2020, replacing long-time CEO Bob Iger.
With COVID-19 disrupting the usual way of running the business, Chapek focused on streaming services to boost profits. This might be one of the board’s main reasons to renew his contract despite facing much backlash surrounding some of his decisions.
Chapek has faced numerous controversies in his tenure, the first being the very public legal battle between Scarlett Johansson and Disney about the latter putting up Black Widow on Disney+ on the same day as its release in theaters.
But this was only the beginning of the crop of scandals rising in Disney’s path under Chapek’s guidance. The biggest thorn in the company’s side came with Chapek’s disastrous handling of Florida’s Don’t Say Gay Bill. Chapek not only faced the wrath of the public but even his employees and subsidiaries.
After facing the burn of Marvel, Pixar, LucasFilm, and more, Chapek apologized for his actions, but the damage was done. Many speculated that Chapek’s current position at Disney was in danger, and he would soon be replaced.
But the world is anything but predictable, and so are the people living in it. The board of directors voted unanimously to renew Bob’s contract, adding another three years, making him CEO till at least 2026.
As confirmed by Variety, the board revealed that they had the well-being of Disney in mind, and Bob Chapek’s work in the streaming market had proved to them his competence, despite the controversies.
In this important time of growth and transformation, the Board is committed to keeping Disney on the successful path it is on today, and Bob’s leadership is key to achieving that goal. Bob is the right leader at the right time for The Walt Disney Company, and the Board has full confidence in him and his leadership team.

Bob Chapek’s commitment rising higher than any projections made about streaming had not only helped keep the company afloat but even strengthened the business—which is why the board was sold on keeping Bob Chapek right where he is.
After the most recent controversy regarding the termination of long-time executive Peter Rice, a recent report written up a month before his extension had stated that some executives were rooting for his dismissal. The renewal of Bob Chapek’s contract will definitely have some adverse effects on the company’s internal chain.
