The early reviews of the latest Star Wars series, Andor, are out and critics are calling it the “grittiest” Star Wars addition yet. The series will witness the return of Diego Luna in the Star Wars franchise as he reprises his role as Andor in Rogue One, the freedom fighter.
Andor is a prequel to the popular Star Wars movie, Rogue One, and features an ensemble cast including Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgard, Fiona Shaw, Adria Arjona, Genevieve O’Reilly, and Forest Whitaker.
Season 1 of the Rogue One prequel is set five years prior to the events of Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars film. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the Andor Season 2 will directly lead to the events of Rogue One.
Based on what we know from the marketing footage and all the other trailers so far, it can be assumed that Andor takes a boots-on-the-ground approach. It hints at being a spy thriller as the titular hero tries to infiltrate the Galactic Empire.
With less than a week left before the series premieres on Disney+, early reactions from critics have been pouring in on social media. The select few who got the opportunity to get early access to the first four episodes of the series are praising this Star Wars installment unlike any of its predecessors.
Check out some of the reactions below:
It seems like Andor has successfully adapted the gritty tone of Rogue One. The two installments not only share the same protagonist but also deal with a different perspective of the entire fight against the Galactic Empire.
Instead of focusing on the big shots involved in the rebellion, this show primarily focuses on the common freedom fighters. They were the unsung heroes of the rebellion and were as essential to the rebellion as Luke Skywalker was. It seems like Lucasfilm is finally giving Andor and the other unsung heroes their due.
Andor Season 1 consists of 12 episodes. The duration of the season is long enough for the makers to not only flesh out its titular character but also develop its supporting cast. Given the general positive ambience in its early reactions, it is expected that the series will live up to its high expectations.
Andor Season 1 will premiere on Disney+ on September 21.
