Zack Snyder has revealed why Darkseid forgot about the whereabouts of the Anti-Life Equation in his Justice League. The director took to Vero (via Twitter user @KnightFleck) to answer a fan’s question regarding the minor plothole in the movie.
In his four-hour-long director’s cut, Snyder features important backstories of Cyborg and The Flash, whose characters weren’t delved on as much in Whedon’s version. Another character brought back into the franchise is Darkseid—the Dark God himself, as he is shown commanding over His Elites and the Apokoliptian Army.
Snyder’s version also shows Darkseid coming to Earth thousands of years ago, before being driven away by Earth’s mightiest heroes. During that very same sequence, the Anti-Life Equation’s location is revealed to be on the planet, but the movie doesn’t explain how Darkseid forgets its location. However, the director has now offered some clarification on that.
According to Snyder, Darkseid’s injuries sustained from his battle with Earth’s defenders are the reason he forgets. His full comment reads:
“He almost died when he returned to apocalypse (sic). He was in a fight for power, and much time passed before he was in a position of power again, and by then, all who had been with him had been slayed.”

Snyder’s explanation makes sense as Darkseid was heavily wounded in the ferocious battle by old Gods, like Ares. Without his allies to help him track down the Equation, and given his state, it would have been a bit of a struggle.
Following the success of the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement and many cryptic posts later by Snyder himself, Warner Bros. confirmed that the Snyder Cut would indeed be dropping in March 2021. In his extended director’s cut, Snyder restores his original vision of the movie and then some.
However, even though Darkseid retrieves information about the Equation’s location by the end of the movie, with Warner Bros. having no further plans of extending the Justice League franchise, it’s unlikely whether he’ll ever get to wield its powers.
