Power, our favorite blood fiend from Chainsaw Man, only needed a little time to endear herself to the audience, winning them over instantly upon arrival. However, with Fujimoto’s streak of hurting his characters, fans are careful about getting too attached.
Power makes it hard not to love her, which is precisely why her sudden death greatly affected us. Makima’s actions make sense in hindsight, but let’s start from the very beginning so we can explain why Power had to die and why (hopefully) she might be coming back.
How Does Power Die?
Yes, Power does die in Chainsaw Man. However, contrary to popular belief, Power did not die in chapter 81 when Makima seemingly blew her head off with a finger gun. Only her existence as a fiend ended, as Power managed to revive herself later.
Power’s actual death happens during the final battle when she sacrifices herself to save Denji from Makima. However, this is not the end, as Power makes a contract with Denji, asking him to find her after she is gone.
Why Did Makima “Kill” Power?
Makima played a significant role in Power’s death, but ultimately, it was a result of the plot and the events leading up to it. Makima’s ultimate goal was to control the Chainsaw Devil. Everything about Denji’s life after she recruited him was a carefully crafted plan to break him enough to control him.
Makima gave Denji the best life he could ask for, only to take it all away. Following Aki’s tragic death, which still leaves all the fans reeling, Makima took Denji’s best friend away from him on his birthday right before his eyes.
The Outcome Of Power’s Revival
In chapter 71, Power offers her blood to Denji as an apology. Consuming Power’s blood leaves some essence of the Blood Devil inside Denji. During the Control Devil arc, Pochita makes a contract with Power through this lingering essence in order to save Denji.
Power returns to attack Makima but does not last much. We witness a heartwarming moment between her and Denji before her death. She makes a contract with him, instructing him to find her when she reincarnates and win her heart.
Power then offers her blood to Denji before she disappears, signifying her death.
What Does Power’s Future Hold?
A devil or a fiend’s death leads to their returning to Hell before eventually reincarnating on Earth again. Their reincarnated forms don’t carry the memory from their past lives as we saw with Nayuta.
While Power’s death left everyone hurt, we have come to accept this with Fujimoto’s works. No one can predict how the story will unfold or whether Power will reincarnate.
However, Denji is determined to keep his promise of finding Power, and Power’s blood still lingers inside him, which might come into play later in the story. Denji might be able to sense a reincarnated Power’s presence.
Nothing is set in concrete yet, except for the effect of Power’s loss on the narrative in Chainsaw Man Part 2. As the story unfolds, we will see how Fujimoto plans to deal with Power’s story.
