Lee Shaw’s ambiguous fate in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 finale leaves open many possibilities for season 2. The backbone of season 1’s plot revolves around Hiroshi Randa’s secret mission and the iconic trio trying to decipher it.
However, while providing answers, the makers have left several loose ends for a potential season 2 to answer.
The finale indicates that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will be a multi-season series. In the end, the central characters get relocated to Skull Island, and the status quo is maintained before the start of season 2.
As for Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw, the ending and the characters’ reactions imply that he’s dead. However, this assumption is yet to be verified. Let’s understand why.
1. Why Lee Shaw May Not be Dead After The Season 1 Finale
Lee Shaw’s death is never confirmed in the finale. Unable to enter the vessel, he gets sucked into the blue vortex while the others leave the underground world. Although feeble, there’s a chance of him being alive.
It seems like MonsterVerse has intentionally left Lee Shaw’s fate to the viewer’s imagination. The lack of his dead body makes this assumption even more accurate.
So, what could’ve happened to Lee Shaw? The most likely answer is teleportation.
Shaw’s fate is a puzzle because of the mysterious nature of the blue vortex that appears when the rift opens. It looks like a gateway for the Titans, like the rifts that lead to the Hollow Earth. If the assumption is correct, then Shaw could’ve been transported somewhere and can easily return in Monarch: Legend of the Monsters season 2.
2. Where does Lee Shaw go in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Finale?
The blue portal could’ve taken Shaw to another part of the Earth’s surface. Alternatively, he could’ve been transported to the true Hollow Earth.
We know that they were stuck in Axis Mundi, a “limbo” that’s separate from the true home of the Titans. It means that they didn’t go far enough to enter the Hollow Earth world. However, Shaw might’ve crossed over into the Hollow Earth through that blue portal.
If so, it will be challenging for him to return in season 2, but not quite impossible.
