Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building ‘is a mystery comedy-drama television series created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman. The show’s third season picks up after season 2’s cliffhanger ending sets up a new murder mystery for the unlikely trio of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel to tackle. Meanwhile, Charles, Oliver, and Mabel each find their motivation to solve the latest case of building murders at hand.
The first episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 3, titled “The Show Must Go On,” ended with a significant twist that left fans reeling. After being poisoned on the opening night of his play, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) seemingly died in the hospital.
However, Ben arrives at the apartment and reveals he is alive, having survived after choking on his tongue after a stomach ache. Oliver is overjoyed and prepares to resume work on his play. Meanwhile, Ben promises to be a better person to everyone on the crew.
Ben’s sudden return raises a lot of questions. How did he survive being poisoned? Who tried to kill him? And what does his reappearance mean for the future of Only Murders in the Building?
1. How did Ben survive being poisoned?
Ben’s poisoning was a mystery that the podcasters were trying to solve throughout the episode. They eventually concluded that he was poisoned with ricin, a deadly toxin that can cause death within hours. However, Ben seemed completely fine when he appeared at the afterparty.
There are a few possible explanations for how Ben survived being poisoned.
One possibility is that he was only given a small dose of ricin, which wasn’t enough to kill him. Another option is that he was given an antidote to ricin. It’s also possible that Ben’s body is naturally immune to ricin.
Only time will tell how Ben survived being poisoned. However, his reappearance suggests that he has a secret that he’s not yet willing to share with the podcasters.
Ben had a lot of enemies in Arconia. He was a demanding and arrogant actor who rubbed many people incorrectly. It’s possible that one of his enemies tried to kill him.
Some of the people who might have wanted to kill Ben include:
Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell): Bunny was Arconia’s board president and was constantly at odds with Ben. She may have tried to kill him to get him out of the play.
Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane): Teddy is a wealthy businessman developing a new hotel on the site of the Arconia. He may have tried to kill Ben to prevent him from blocking the development.
Charles (Steve Martin): Charles was jealous of Ben’s success and may have tried to kill him in a rage.
Oliver (Martin Short): Oliver was also jealous of Ben and may have tried to kill him to save his career.
It’s also possible that Ben’s poisoning was an accident. He may have been poisoned by someone who didn’t intend to kill him.
2. Episode 2 Ending Explained: How did Ben die?
The second episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 3, titled “The Beat Goes On,” ended with another significant twist that left fans reeling. After collapsing on stage during the opening night of his play, Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) was pronounced dead. However, he appeared surprised at the afterparty, much to the shock of everyone present.
However, the night ends with Ben falling down the empty elevator shaft and dying for real.
Ben’s second death is a mystery that will likely be the focus of the rest of Only Murders in the Building Season 3. There are a few possible explanations for how Ben died, but none are entirely satisfying.
One possibility is that Ben was murdered. This is the most likely explanation, as it would explain why he was found dead in the elevator shaft. However, it’s not clear who would have wanted to kill Ben. He didn’t seem to have any enemies and was generally well-liked by everyone in the Arconia.
Another possibility is that Ben committed suicide. This is less likely, but it’s still possible. Ben was under much stress from the play and may have felt like he couldn’t handle it anymore. He may have also felt guilty about something, such as the poisoning attempt against him.
It’s also possible that Ben’s death was an accident. This is the least likely explanation, but it’s still possible. Ben may have been drunk or high, and he may have fallen down the elevator shaft accidentally.
Only time will tell how Ben died. However, his second death is a significant twist that will significantly impact the rest of Only Murders in the Building. It raises a lot of questions that the podcasters will need to answer.
3. Who is Gregg?
In addition to Ben’s death, the second episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 3 also introduced a new character: Gregg (Adrian Martinez). Gregg is a stalker who is obsessed with Ben. He was the one who kidnapped Charles and Mabel in the basement of his apartment.
Gregg’s introduction adds a new layer of danger to the show. The podcasters are now not only in danger from the person who killed Ben but also from Gregg.
4. Who Killed Ben Glenroy?
In the episode’s final act, Charles and Mabel find themselves in trouble when they realize that Gregg is not who he says he is. Gregg did not work for Ben. Instead, he is a fanatic stalker who adored Ben to the point of worshipping.
Moreover, Gregg believes that Charles and Mabel had a hand in killing Ben, especially since they were near the elevator shaft where Ben’s dead body was discovered. Gregg knocks out Charles and Mabel and drags them to his basement, where he plans to kill them.
Thankfully, Detective Biswas, an associate of Detective Williams, arrives just in time to apprehend Gregg. Detective Biswas reveals he had been keeping tabs on Gregg since the latter was spotted fleeing the Arconia after Ben’s death.
However, Mabel argues that despite Gregg’s psychotic behavior, he could not have been the killer. Gregg admired Ben and had also stolen Ben’s memorial handkerchief, which the actor had gifted to his crew on the opening day. The photos Mabel clicked of Ben’s dead body reveal he was holding a similar handkerchief when he died. As a result, Mabel deduces that Ben has the killer’s cloth and the killer is someone who worked among the crew for Oliver’s play.
The episode ends with Charles and Mabel relaying the information to Oliver and dragging him back to create another season of their podcast. However, it is implied that Mabel’s loneliness is behind her push to solve the murder mystery and continue making the podcast.
The second episode of Only Murders in the Building Season 3 was another exciting and suspenseful installment. It left fans with a lot to think about and raised many questions that need to be answered in the coming episodes. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
