Dickinson Season 3 Episode 9 Speculation
The previous episode showcased Emily spiraling down a staircase of her deepest fears and anxieties. She’s afraid of her family blaming her for being the way she is as we see in her visions of Vinnie – Emily is afraid that Vinnie resents her for instilling ideas of independence in her and that’s why Vinnie burns her poems in the vision.
Another major inner conflict that Emily has is guilt about her relationship with Sue—she loves Sue with all her heart but perhaps has shame bubbling inside of her all this time because of how this relationship has impacted her brother, who is Sue’s legal husband. It’s likely that seeing this manifestation of her guilt might cause her to confront it and actually resolve things with Sue.
Lastly, she feels disillusioned because of ever believing in her father. The confrontation with Betty causes her to lose hope even more. However, the last scene in which Henry’s regiment emerges victorious in a battle causes her to feel hope again. The yellow bird is perhaps a symbol of hope prevailing in Emily’s mind and worldview.
What did Sue submit anonymously to the newspaper? Does the regiment succeed in the battle in real life? Find out in the next episode.

Dickinson Season 3 Episode 8 Recap
Episode 8, titled My Life had stood – a Loaded Gun, opens on the day of Frazar’s memorial. Even as she tries to keep her Family’s hope alive, the episode ends with her descending into a “personal inferno”.
Emily goes to Austin’s house and pleads with him to temporarily put aside their differences and go to Frazar’s funeral as a family. Austin dismisses her completely and tells her he’d rather mourn Frazar in private than have to witness their father act like he knew Frazar. At the funeral, Emily sees a vision of Frazar’s “ghost.”
Edward asks Emily to be the executor of his will. Emily suggests that he set up a scholarship fund as part of his legacy and Edward approves of the idea. When he names Austin to be the heir of his estate, especially after everything that has happened, Emily is heartbroken. She refers to him as a ‘scared sheep’ and storms out.
On her way out, she runs into Betty who’s dealing with her own devastatingly bad news. She tells Emily that she has no use for ‘hope’ and that poems won’t change anything. Emily runs into the woods, where she sees a vision of Frazer again. She enters into an open grave and the scene transforms into an eerie version of her own house. She sees all her deepest fears and anxieties materialized—Vinnie blaming her for diverting her focus from finding a husband, Austin blaming her for destroying his marriage, her father dying.
Lastly, Sue accuses her of not being attracted to her anymore and tells Emily never to touch her again. Emily tries to chase after her but the door opens into a battlefield full of corpses of dead soldiers. She sees Higginson’s regiment, led by Henry, charge towards the soldiers and seemingly succeed in the battle. She sees the yellow bird again and gets transported back to the present.
About Dickinson
Dickinson is an Apple TV+ comedy series based on the life of American poet Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886). Dickinson was one of the most important figures in American poetry who remained little-known during her lifetime. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, into a prominent family with strong ties to its community.
The Apple TV comedy takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of the 19th Century society, its gender norms, and familial responsibilities. Dickinson is Emily’s coming-of-age story – one woman’s fight to get her voice heard.
Embarrassed by her own parents and shunned from society, Dickinson will stop at nothing to rebel against her strict background and make her voice heard through the magic of poetry.
