Emily

Higginson reads another letter from Emily, impressed by her using the word ‘oblique’ to describe war. He summons Henry to his office and tells him that the regiment will have a uniform inspection. When he tells the soldiers about this, they express their frustration to him and tell him that this is just another way to delay giving them weapons. Henry helps the soldiers sew up their uniforms and they pass the inspection. However, Higginson still doesn’t give them a clear answer on when they’ll get their weapons.

Meanwhile, the women explore the asylum. Mrs. Dickinson meets a seemingly wealthy woman who only pretends to be crazy just so she can stay in the asylum and get much needed rest and relaxation. Vinnie meets a woman who was diagnosed with grief. She tells her that her lover Joseph Lyman died in the war. Vinnie is thrilled to hear that Joseph’s heart belonged to her and the two women cry over his death.

Emily is intrigued by a closed door and she sneaks inside only to discover that several women were being kept in the asylum against their will for reasons such as being suffragettes or not conforming to gender norms or simply because their husbands or family members put them there. She decides to help them escape. The head doctor at the asylum declares Emily a lunatic and insists that Edward have her committed.

Edward tells the head doctor his daughter will return home with him and that he will not leave her at the asylum even if it means losing the trustee position.

About Dickinson

Dickinson is an Apple TV+ comedy series based on the life of American poet Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886). Dickinson was one of the most important figures in American poetry who remained little-known during her lifetime. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, into a prominent family with strong ties to its community.

The Apple TV comedy takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of the 19th Century society, its gender norms, and familial responsibilities. Dickinson is Emily’s coming-of-age story – one woman’s fight to get her voice heard.

Embarrassed by her own parents and shunned from society, Dickinson will stop at nothing to rebel against her strict background and make her voice heard through the magic of poetry.
