Dickinson Season 3 Episode 3 Recap
Chaos ensues in the Dickinson household. Emily is glad to see her father out of bed as he declares he’s accepted his own mortality and is ready to get his affairs in order. He also tells her he’s forgiven Austin for his outburst. Lavinia is organizing a sewing circle to make bandages for soldiers and asks Emily to join them.
Emily is eager to get back to her room so she can collect her thoughts and focus on writing but her family has other plans for her. She keeps getting drawn in to solve the conflicts that are going on in her dysfunctional family. Sue is also upset with Emily for not spending time with her and attending the sewing circle instead. Sue is having a hard time with the new baby and a nitpicky mother-in-law and an absent husband. Emily is her only source of support and comfort.
During the sewing circle meeting, the topic of poetry comes up. Betty agrees with Emily’s philosophy of words having the power to heal and recounts how the letters from Henry gave her daughter hope. According to her, writing that shuts out the mess of the world, is as good as dead.
Austin shows up drunk and injured after a bar fight. George comes to see Emily in her room and gives her an issue of The Atlantic and encourages her to get back to her poetry.
About Dickinson
Dickinson is an Apple TV+ comedy series based on the life of American poet Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886). Dickinson was one of the most important figures in American poetry who remained little-known during her lifetime. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, into a prominent family with strong ties to its community.
The Apple TV comedy takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of the 19th Century society, its gender norms, and familial responsibilities. Dickinson is Emily’s coming-of-age story – one woman’s fight to get her voice heard.
Embarrassed by her own parents and shunned from society, Dickinson will stop at nothing to rebel against her strict background and make her voice heard through the magic of poetry.
