Dickinson Season 3 Episode 9 Recap
The episode begins with Edward and Ithamar traveling in a carriage. Ithamar excitedly tells Edward that the Republican party intends to nominate him for the position of Lieutenant Governor and that he can’t wait for his comeback to politics. When Edward asserts that he’s simply not interested, Ithamar kicks him out of the carriage when they’re halfway to Boston. Edward walks back to Boston and stops at Betty’s, who kindly offers him a bowl of soup.
Emily calls for a siblings’ meeting and the three of them meet near the barn. She tells Vinnie and Austin that their father plans to leave all his assets and property, including the two sisters, to Austin. She admits to Austin that she was wrong about their father, and the siblings reconcile. Austin tells his sisters they don’t have to worry about his intentions as their future guardian and that promises to give them the freedom they deserve.
Emily goes to her mother’s chambers to cheer her up. Her mother opens up about the grief of not only losing her sister but not having had the chance to grow up with her because she got married so young. She misses her sister dearly and shares fond memories of her with Emily. They discover a mouse in the room. While the two are initially shocked at this discovery, it quickly becomes an endearing scene as they speak to the mouse as if it was her deceased sister.
While the regiment is celebrating their victory, Higginson runs in to greet and congratulate them. He talks to them about how he lost his way as a reformer and will be taking some time off to reflect. He promotes Henry to Sergeant and tells him he’ll be leaving soon to go to Amherst to see Emily Dickinson.
Meanwhile, Austin opens up to George and Sue about having paid the bartender to go to war in his place. George tells him he understands why he did what he did. They host a going away party for George as he’s also been drafted. Sue tells Emily that she’d submitted her poem to the newspaper and Emily leads it aloud for everyone. Emily and Sue spend the night in each other’s embrace and make love.
About Dickinson
Dickinson is an Apple TV+ comedy series based on the life of American poet Emily Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886). Dickinson was one of the most important figures in American poetry who remained little-known during her lifetime. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, into a prominent family with strong ties to its community.
The Apple TV comedy takes viewers into the world of Emily, audaciously exploring the constraints of the 19th Century society, its gender norms, and familial responsibilities. Dickinson is Emily’s coming-of-age story – one woman’s fight to get her voice heard.
Embarrassed by her own parents and shunned from society, Dickinson will stop at nothing to rebel against her strict background and make her voice heard through the magic of poetry.
