The episode 8 of Dexter: New Blood has opened a can of worms that might possibly ruin the reboot that had been praised for being a good one so far.
Episode 8, titled Unfair Game, has left die-hard fans of the series feeling puzzled. In what seems like an attempt to hurriedly somehow connect the crime to Dexter, the writers have ended up making a big mistake.
With just two more episodes left, the story will wind up soon. And episode 8 fastened this pace as Angela continued her quest for answers about Dexter Morgan.
When she finds out that Jasper’s body had traces of Ketamine, she looks up the case of the Bay Harbour Butcher of Miami, who also used to use Ketamine on his victims.
This could easily link Jim/Dexter to the Bay Harbour Butcher’s MO. However, here’s the hitch – he never used Ketamine during his time as BHB.
A quick refresher of season 1 will confirm this plot hole. Dexter used M99, aka Etorphine (an analgesic with a potency 1000-3000 times stronger than morphine), to immobilize his victims and bought it under the alias of Dr. Patrick Bateman.
He even went through the trouble of deleting the proof, and Masuka’s suspicions led nowhere because there was no evidence of his fake alias in Vince’s email list.
So there’s no reason explaining why Ketamine would link the two cases to increase Angela’s suspicion. Many fans called it lazy writing or changing details for the plot’s convenience.
However, it might as well be a mistake in police reports that simply happens to be an accidental coincidence that leads her directly to the one person she was suspecting. It’d be interesting to see if there really is a solid explanation for this change in the final episodes.
Dexter: New Blood Episode 9 Preview:
The promo for episode 9, titled The Family Business, hints at Dexter finally revealing to his son, Harrison, the secret of the Code of Harry.
According to the episode’s synopsis, Dexter and Harrison are about to have a real father-son moment. They “find themselves closer than ever over Christmas break, bringing father and son into the crosshairs of a serial killer” as Angela’s suspicions grow stronger.
Hopefully, all answers will be revealed when Dexter: New Blood airs episode 9 on January 2, 2022, at 9/8c on SHOWTIME.
About Dexter
Dexter is a cult classic crime drama series that first aired on Showtime. The show’s first season was derived from the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter (2004), the first in a series of novels by Jeff Lindsay. It was adapted for television by James Manos Jr., who wrote the first episode. Subsequent seasons evolved independently of Lindsay’s works.
Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) is introduced as a serial killer who kills other killers who have escaped from, or haven’t been found by the justice system. By day he is a blood spatter analyst who works for the Homicide Department of the Miami Metro Police.
