Writer-director of Dune, Denis Villeneuve revealed that the cast and crew will begin filming for Dune: Part Two this summer. He also confirmed that the script of part two is now complete.
In an interview with Empire, Villeneuve updated fans on the status of Dune: Part Two.
We are supposed to shoot by the end of the summer. I will say it is mostly designed. The thing that helps us right now is that it’s the first time I’ve revisited a universe. So I’m working with the same crew, everybody knows what to do, we know what it will look like. The movie will be more challenging, but we know where we are stepping. And the screenplay is written. So I feel confident. Frankly, the only big unknown for me right now is the pandemic.
Denis Villeneuve
Dune: Part Two is likely to focus on the second half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. Villeneuve had adapted the first part of the same novel in Dune: Part One.
Villeneuve is not the first director to adapt Dune into a film. In 1984, David Lynch adapted Herbert’s novel, creating a magnum opus.
Set in the fictional planet of Arrakis, Dune revolves around Paul Atreides, a young boy who must take on crucial responsibility for his house Atreides. On paper, Dune is like Game of Thrones, but set in the far future and has the sci-fi touch to it.
Dune: Part One released in theatres and premiered on HBO Max in October 2021 to more or less favorable reviews. Soon after, a sequel to the film was announced officially. Dune: Part One consisted of an ensemble cast, including Timothee Chamalet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin and Oscar Isaac.
Many of them are all set to return for the sequel. Chalamet will once again be seen as protagonist Paul Atreides, while Zendaya, who plays Paul’s love interest Chani and one of the Fremen (the native people of Arrakis) will reportedly have a larger role to play as compared to part one.
Villeneuve seems quite confident about making Dune into a franchise. He has earlier expressed interest in converting the franchise into a potential trilogy, including Herbert’s second novel Dune Messiah.
A HBO Max spin-off prequel series titled The Sisterhood is also reportedly on the cards, though only time will tell how much of Villeneuve’s plans will actually bear fruits.
Dune: Part Two is set to hit the theatres on 20th October, 2023.
