When the whole world was under lockdown and people were turning to OTTs for entertainment, many feared that the age of watching movies in cinema may slowly die out now.
But UFOTABLE came out and said ‘Hold my beer’ as it released one of the most anticipated and successful movies of the year, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, in a ‘theatres only’ format. And this was despite the risks of people not showing up and questionable safety precautions amidst the pandemic.
The rest was history, as Demon Slayer: Mugen Train shattered all respectable cinema records in Japan and even dethroned Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away in the race to ¥30 billion ($288 million).
It took the Kimetsu no Yaiba movie just 59 days to reach the milestone, while the former took 253 days.
Recently, the Demon Slayer movie broke yet another record by grossing over $340 million, becoming the first-ever Japanese movie to score this much profit in its theatrical run.
Also, it is worth mentioning that, it has been released only in some select cinemas across Asia in very few countries. The movie is now set to release in western countries in the next couple of months.
And following the hype going for the movie, the profits are bound to skyrocket once it gets released across the globe.
The success of Demon Slayer: The Movie was also reflected in the sales of Kimetsu no Yaiba manga, which sold over 12 million copies last year, as the movie hooked the viewers to the series.
This also earned the manga first spot on Oricon’s Manga Sales Ranking, selling four times the number of copies as the runner up (Jujutsu Kaisen – 3 million copies).
Many people who didn’t turn to manga to read ahead in the story are eagerly waiting for the release of the second season of the series, once again, to get blown away by the top-notch animations and amazing plot.
Although, it should be kept in mind that the movie is not a standalone part of the franchise – which does not affect the main storyline, and anyone without prior knowledge can enjoy the movie.
Rather, it is the continuation of the main plot of the series Demon Slayer and picks up right from the point where the first season of the franchise left.
So, if you are lucky enough to have the movie screening in cinemas around you, make sure to catch up to the series before you go and immerse yourself in this masterpiece.
About Kimetsu no Yaiba
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotoge.
Its publication in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump began in February 2016 with 19 collected tankōbon volumes released as of present.
In a world filled with demons and demon slayers, Kimetsu no Yaiba follows the lives of two siblings Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado, after— the murder of their family at the hands of a demon.
Their hardship does not end there, as Nezuko’s life is spared only for her to live as a demon.
As the oldest sibling, Tanjiro vows to protect and cure his sister. The story traces the bond of this brother-sister or, better yet, demon slayer and demon combo against the odds of an arch antagonist and the society.
