Chapter 196 of the Demon Slayer was released on the 1st. And boy, oh boy – does it have some significant things to say.
The chapter traces Nezuko’s transformation from demon to human and reveals the absolute deadliness of Tamayo’s medicine.
It also sheds light on the event that kickstarts the story – the murder of the Kamado family and Muzan’s motivations.
Chapter 197 Release Date & Speculation
Chapter 197 of the Demon Slayer will be released on March 8th. Chapter 196 has narrowed down options for Muzan and has created palpable pressure. Tamayo’s malicious glee is reminiscent of all fans as they discover what’s in store for him – in the next chapter.
The fourth effect of the medicine – cell degeneration – was unprecedented. With the call for 35 minutes to sunrise, Muzan is left with no option but to flee.
But it is likely that the rest of the Pillars will join the fray in the coming chapter cementing Muzan’s fate. It would be interesting if Muzan still has some dirty trick up his sleeve – but the battle is almost reaching its climax. The smell of victory is close!
Chapter 197 Theories
Chapter 197 will see the deterioration of Muzan’s strength and his desperate attempts to flee. It is revealed that Tamayo’s medicine has also prevented his division and buried a final blow to Muzan – cell degeneration.
We know that Muzan values his life over anything. Therefore, it is likely that he will attempt to flee from Iguro and Tanjiro before they’re joined by the Pillars.
We think this might lead to a chase, but we speculate that Muzan’s attempts will fail. Nezuko’s transformation into a human in the chapter has also closed doors for Muzan in terms of rejuvenating.
Chapter 196 Plot
Chapter 196 begins with Nezuko gaining access to her memories before her demon transformation and during her time as a demon. This reveals the perpetrator behind the murder of her family – Muzan.
Given that Tanjiro had smelled his presence at the crime scene – this was not much of a surprise. But her memories add a juicy detail regarding his motivation – it was in an attempt to create a demon that can withstand the sun (mirroring his needs).
Nezuko goes through an array of memories that reminds her of the people she loves, and that supported her. As her transformation to human reaches a climax, her thoughts say – “I am Nezuko Kamado.”
Meanwhile, Muzan’s desperation has become apparent. He’s able to sense the life in other Pillars and is confronted with the fact that they’re alive due to Yushiro’s swift actions.
When the crow calls 35 minutes to sunrise – Muzan’s option to flee becomes the only plausibility for him. But to his dismay, he is unable to divide like he did to escape from Yoriichi. It is then that he coughs blood.
Muzan begins to grip the reality of Tamayo’s medicine that has prevented his division. It is, then, that Tamayo’s spirit lets him in on the fourth effect of the medicine – cell degeneration. The chapter ends with Muzan’s shock.
