Delaying ‘Black Widow’ Might Triple the Box Office Results

The box office projections for Marvel’s Black Widow more than tripled thanks to its most recent release delay.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has suffered yet another delay due to the pandemic.

Initially getting pushed back from a May 2020 release to November 2020, and then May 2021, Marvel’s Black Widow has finally landed on a July 9 release in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access this year.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow is the first solo movie for Scarlett Johansson’s Marvel character.

The movie stars David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, and Florence Pugh as Natasha Romanov’s so-called family, who were all part of the Black Widow program in some shape or form.

The new Black Widow trailer has been watched more than WandaVision and Loki‘s first looks. This proves there is still momentum behind the release despite its many delays. However, some fans haven’t been happy with the delays.

People are wondering why Disney hasn’t just released Black Widow on Disney+ Premier Access while the pandemic is ongoing.

According to The Observer, a box office analysis on Black Widow forecasts that it now stands to make up to $170 million domestically.

This is more than three times the amount it was projected to make when it was going to be released in May (the original projection standing at just $45 million domestically.)

Jeff Bock, Senior Box Office Analyst at Exhibitor Relations, told the Observer that the delay has only “helped their cause” as the box office potential is only going to increase as the release is pushed into the summer.

Hollywood has been forced to push the release dates for several movies for more than a year. Daniel Craig’s final Bond movie No Time to Die has been delayed five times, while MGM’s new entry in the Fast and Furious saga, F9, has shifted release dates six times.

However, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong has raced past $300 million worldwide in two weeks, sparking optimism throughout Hollywood (and calls to #ContinuetheMonsterVerse).

As per Disney, Black Widow stands a solid chance at making a profit, especially after adding international box office potential and money made from Disney+’s Premier Access fees.

The decision to delay the MCU outing, along with six other movies, implies Disney might end up having a better 2021 at the box office than what the analysts predicted at the beginning of the year.

About Black Widow

Black Widow is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is intended to be the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Directed by Cate Shortland and written by Eric Pearson, the movie stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff alongside Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, and Rachel Weisz.

It will be the first film in Phase Four of the MCU, and was delayed three times from an original May 2020 release date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Disney confirms Marvel Studios’ Black Widow will release on Disney+ for no extra cost to existing subscribers after its Premier Access release, October 6.

The film follows Natasha Romanoff as she confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger.
