1. Release Date
The story of Death Parade came into existence in the form of a short animated film called Death Billiards. Upon the release of the 12 episode anime, it created a massive boom of fans worldwide.
The demand for the sequel arose and the studio decided to announce a second season in 2016, which has still to be released.
There is no official update on a second season of Death Parade from the studio or producers.
However, if Madhouse considers making a sequel, we speculate than can expect it to release sometime in early 2021 or late 2020. As soon as we have any official news, we will update this article.
2. Theory Section
Why should we look forward to this anime? Let’s look into the technical details such as the animation, the studio, and its popularity to check what influences the production of ‘Death Parade Season 2’.
I. About the Studio
Madhouse is extremely well known for creating massive anime hits such as Death Note, One Punch Man, Hunter x Hunter, and more.
The producer and creator of Death Parade, Yuzuru Tachikawa, is noted for his work in Bleach, Chihayafuru, and most recently in Deca-Dence.
II. How well did Death Parade do?
Death Parade has been nominated for the ‘Best female vocal and Best male vocal in anime series/OVA’ and won the ‘Best vocal ensemble in anime series/OVA’ for BTVA anime dub.
IGN listed Death Parade among the best anime series of the 2010s. According to a poll on Niconico, Death Parade was the users’ ninth favourite anime of 2015.
III. Animation Quality
Madhouse went all-out in designing the artwork and visuals for this anime. They did a great job of creating a moody bar and still keep it as a place for leisure. The character design and the dark atmosphere are kept consistent every episode.
The games on the other hand are very creative. Each one of them are something very simple, but the terrifying twists each one has, keeps the viewers watching in horror.
The artwork gives the impression of a mythical purgatory realm and does well in keeping the thriller-like aesthetic.
IV. Was Season 1 any good?
The one reason why Death Parade became so popular is because of its complexity. It explores human nature in-depth and it is shown in various ways with the show’s story, characters, and mystery.
Life and Death; a show completely built on these terms implores human interest. The anime did a good job by mixing these with mortal topics like revenge, love, friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice.
The show is well written, it is witty and fun for people who have dark humour, quiet and serene for some. The unexpected ending has left many fans begging for a second series.
3. New Key Visuals
No new key visuals for Death Parade season 2 have been released yet. We don’t know whether the writers will create a completely new storyline or continue from the end of season 1.
The trailers for the 2nd season of Death Parade have not been released yet. We will update the article as soon as they are released.
5. Recap
The story revolves around Decim, a bartender and Arbiter of Quindecim. Quindecim serves as a place for souls who died at the same time. Decim intimidates the recent dead to play a game, in order to judge their souls whether they will go to the void or reincarnate.
The souls’ memories are erased and are sent back during the death games. Depending on their behaviour in the games, Decim will pass judgement on their souls.
The anime is centered on death, what the soul experienced in the past and how they reached Quindecim. The games reveal the secrets of participants which ultimately decide their fate.
Essentially, the show tells us that the games’ winners and losers don’t matter, but it is the morality of the participants that Decim focuses on.
6. Expected Storyline
Since season 1 was adapted from Death Billiards, there is no actual source material for the second season. The producers will have to create complete new content for the sequel.
We can speculate that the second season will focus on Decim’s origin and his past. Or maybe it will centre around different bars on different floors in the world or we can know the reason why Oculus is a puppet.
7. Cast & Staff
There might not be any change in the cast and staff for the second season:
Director | Yuzuru Tachikawa |
Series Composition | Yuzuru Tachikawa |
Character Design | Shinichi Kurita |
Tomoaki Maeno | Decim |
Asami Seto | Black-Haired-Woman |

8. About Death Parade
Whenever someone dies, they are sent to one of many mysterious bars run by bartenders serving as arbiters (judges) inside a tower in the afterlife. There, they must participate in Death Games with their souls on the line.
The results of which reveal what secrets led them to their situation and what their fate will be afterward. The arbiters judge if their souls should be sent for reincarnation or banished into the void.
The series follows Decim, the lone bartender of the bar where people who died at the same time are sent to, known as the Quindecim bar, whose role in judging these souls changes when he meets a curious black-haired woman.
