Dead Island 2 is the sequel to 2011’s Dead Island. The original game’s success was noted in 2013 when the developers mentioned that the game had sold 5 million copies across all platforms.
The sequel was first announced in 2014’s E3. Initially picked by Yager Development Studios, it was handed to Sumo Digital in 2016 and then to Dambuster Studios in 2019, who delivered the finished product.
Dead Island 2, a zombie-killing game at heart, was well received, despite a decade of wait. The sequel has sold over 1 million copies in only three days after its launch on April 21, 2023.
A press release by Deep Silver stated that “the sequel won fans from all around the world with countless players snapping up a copy of the drop-dead gore-geous game in the first 72 hours.”
They provided some in-game stats to go with the mammoth achievement:
- A total of 11 million hours were played in-game.
- Total number of player deaths was 28 million, which happens to be twice the population of Los Angeles
- 45 million zombies were sliced in half.
- 756 million zombie limbs were hacked off.
- 1.1 billion zombies were slayed.
As noted by wccftech, while the game doesn’t have a particularly long storyline, it doesn’t mean the game isn’t enjoyable.
They noted that, in general, games going through developmental hell do not turn out nicely. Such is not the case with Dead Island 2.
It was also mentioned that at a lower price, the game’s mindless gore would have been justified. But at the total price, Dead Island 2 has the wrong value for money.
The game performs well on PC. It has also been well-optimized across all platforms, offering outstanding performance and a decent level of visuals.
