The DC Extended Universe has been brewing some upcoming movies for all of us for a while now. Due to the pandemic, movie releases took a backseat.
But since we’re slowly getting back to business, I have put together a list of all the upcoming movies that fit into the DCEU that we’re looking forward to and maybe you can, too!
DC and Warner Bros. have confirmed most of these films and most have a release date. But some of the release dates are yet to be announced. Also, the superhero genre has a universal appeal and even if you aren’t one of those hardcore DC fans, some of these might interest you.
Here’s a list of all the officially confirmed upcoming DC movies so far, what we know about them so far, how they fit into the DC universe, and an update on the release date.
1 The Batman
Status – Post production
Release Date – March 4, 2022
This one has got some history. After Ben Affleck decided to step down from the director’s chair of this movie and decided only to act in it, the direction was taken up by Matt Reeves (the director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes). Later, Affleck completely disassociated himself with the project.
The film is supposed to be noir-esque and explore the detective angle of our beloved superhero, which has not been delved into in Batman films before. Also, this is not another origin story.
According to Reeves, the film, set in the second year of Bruce Wayne as Batman, is a mystery thriller that will involve Wayne following a series of crimes involving The Riddler. Robert Pattinson plays Batman and we can’t wait to see how he fits into the role.
Other than Pattinson, the film is also set to star an ensemble cast with Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Collin Farrell as Penguin, Paul Dono as The Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and Peter Sarsgaard in a mystery role which may or may not be Two-face.
Easily, my most awaited one.
2 Black Adam
Status – Post production
Release Date – July 29, 2022
Dwayne Johnson was roped in by Warner Bros. to play the antihero/antagonist Black Adam to DC’s Shazam quite some time ago. He was supposed to star in Shazam!, but later he revealed that DC is planning two movies instead: one for Shazam and another for Black Adam.
Black Adam is all set to introduce the Justice Society of America with characters such as Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Hawkman (Aldis Hodge). Lawrence Sher, the Oscar-nominated cinematographer for Joker, has been roped in as well.
The filming got delayed due to COVID-19 and Warner Bros finally shifted the release date from December 2021 to July 2022.
3 The Flash
Status – Filming
Release Date – November 4, 2022
This one is pretty important for introducing the multiverse in the DC cinematic universe. Ezra Miller will be reprising his role as The Flash, while both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are set to return as Batman. The film will also introduce us to Batgirl (Sasha Calle).
The story will most likely be based on the arc in DC comics where Barry goes back to the past to save his mother’s life. As a result, he ends up creating an alternate timeline. And that is how the multiverse arc comes in.
The studio revealed back in 2017 that the film will be titled Flashpoint, which is a popular name for the alternate timeline story. This could be the chance for DCEU to fix some issues by altering the time periods.
Filming began in April 2021, around the same time as Black Adam, and is set to release in November 2022.
4 Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom
Status – Filming
Release Date – December 16, 2022
When Aquaman (2018) became the highest-grossing film of the DCEU till then, Warner Bros. set forward to bring on a sequel to the film.
Director James Wan insisted on a proper script to be ready before he can move forward and the team finally began filming in July 2021.
The cast includes Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson among others, and the screenplay is based on a story idea by Momoa himself. If things go well, this might just break the records set by Aquaman.
5 Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Status – Filming
Release Date – June 2, 2023
Following the tremendous success of Shazam!, New Line Cinema roped in writer Henry Gayden to craft a screenplay for a sequel. Director David F. Sandberg was also confirmed to return once again for this project.
The pandemic delayed the filming and post-production of the film, which was eventually pushed to 2023. Filming began in May 2021 with a cast featuring Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Lucy Liu, who plays the antagonist.
6 Wonder Woman 3
Status – In development
Release Date – To be announced
Post the release of Wonder Woman 1984, Warner Bros. announced that another Wonder Woman film is on the way. Patty Jenkins is writing the screenplay, while Gal Godot is also set to return as the titular superhero.
Jenkins had revealed earlier that she had a trilogy arc planned for Wonder Woman, but plans have changed since the pandemic hit. Jenkins is now on board to direct the new Star Wars movie, so we’re not sure Wonder Woman 3 is on her plate anymore.
So, bottom line is that it’s a little dicey when we will get the next Wonder Woman movie. But it definitely is in development.
7 Blue Beetle
Status – In development
Release Date – To be announced
Blue Beetle is set to be the first Latino superhero movie for DC. Angel Manuel Soto has reportedly been roped in as the director for the screenplay written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.
We don’t know much about this film, but it most likely is supposed to release on HBO Max. The titular role of Blue Beetle will be played by Xolo Mariduena.
8 Batgirl
Status – In development
Release Date – To be announced
Not much is known about this ambitious project. Warner Bros took up this one back in 2017, but since then, little has been known about its development except Joss Whedon stepping down as the writer and director of the film.
As of May 2021, filmmakers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah have been roped in to write the script and the film is in talks for premiering on HBO Max. Leslie Grace is supposed to play Batgirl.
9 Untitled Joker and Harley Quinn Movie
Status – In development
Release date – To be announced
Apart from The Batman, this one is the film I am eagerly waiting for. If Warner Bros plays their cards right, this could take the audience by storm like Joker (2019) did.
The film, announced in August 2017, is supposed to be a “criminal love story” featuring the much-discussed and controversial relationship between Harley Quinn and Joker. The Suicide Squad spin-off will have us see Jared Leto and Margot Robbie return as Joker and Quinn respectively.
John Requa and Glenn Ficarra are on board for writing, directing, and producing this film. They described their script as “Bad Santa meets This is Us”. So we can simply wait for Warner Bros to take it up and make it a reality.
10 Other DC Movies in Development
Apart from the ones I just mentioned, there are several other DC movies that are in development but there is no confirmation about how production is supposed to begin or who stars in them. I have put together these untitled or titled movies, which have been announced but have not been officially taken up yet.
- Blackhawk: Steven Spielberg is in talks for directing this film based on the DC comic of the same name.
- Untitled Joker movie starring Jared Leto
- Supergirl
- Nightwing
- Justice League Dark
- Untitled sequel to Man of Steel
- Untitled Lobo movie
- Untitled Deathstroke movie
