Deathstroke and 12 DC Villains That Were Almost In The Suicide Squad

James Gunn’s take on The Suicide Squad is going to be very different than the 2016 film. Gunn brought back Harley Quinn, Amanda Waller, and some others from the first film but also included comic characters like Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Weasel, King Shark, Starro, among others.

When a fan asked if Gunn could reveal any villains that almost made the cut for the upcoming film, he revealed a list of 13 villains whom he considered while writing for the film.

When I first considered taking the job of writing #TheSuicideSquad I kept a file folder of characters I was considering. Here are just a few (of many) that didn’t make the cut (for now!)

Gunn explained that every character in the film was chosen for a purpose. Regardless of how small or big, all the characters chosen now will impact the storyline. He excluded the other characters as they didn’t serve the story as well.

But this doesn’t mean that these characters will never see the day of light. On the contrary, Gunn assured fans that he is “open to using them in the future.”

Here are 13 DC villains that sadly didn’t make the cut this time:

Livewire, aka Leslie Willis, is a powerful electrokinetic supervillain.

Punch and Jewlee are both criminals and inmates in Arkham Asylum. They’re obsessed lovers and partners in crime. Notice a strong resemblance to the Joker and Harley Quinn? They’re just as crazy about each other, but this couple is a lot less toxic than their famous counterparts.

Black Spider is a ruthless killer vigilante who mainly targets the drug trade. His murderous methods and willingness to let innocents die or be injured in his plans have lead him into repeated conflicts with Batman.

Slade Wilson, known by his codename, Deathstroke, is an elite mercenary, commonly considered the world’s greatest and deadliest assassin.

Man-Bat, aka Robert Kirkland “Kirk” Langstrom is a scientist who can turn himself into a humanoid bat-creature with a serum.

Plastique is a Canadian political activist and terrorist who can generate explosive blasts.

Chemo, originally a huge plastic vessel, is about twenty-five feet tall and roughly man-shaped, built by eccentric scientist Ramsey Norton to contain the chemical by-products from his failed experiments.

Anatoli Knyazev, codenamed The Beast and known to the CIA as the KGBeast, was an elite assassin for a top-secret KGB cell called “The Hammer.”

Solomon Grundy is an immortal zombie supervillain from the 19th Century with several origins. Originally murdered in the Slaughter Swamp, he resurrects and regenerates there every time he is killed again in his zombie form.

The Rainbow Creature is a powerful entity shrouded in mystery that rose from a South American volcano. Its body is covered in red, yellow, green, and blue stripes, with each color representing a different power.

Liam Hawkleigh, better known as Gunhawk, was a mercenary, the partner of Gunbunny. He was an enemy of the new Batman.

Knockout was a former Female Fury from Apokolips whose hidden identity was that of a super-strong stripper who worked at a club called the BoomBoom Room.

Anatoli Knyazev/KGBeast has appeared in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but apart from him and Deathstroke, none of the other villains in the list have appeared in the DCEU. Although, Plastique and Livewire have appeared in CW’s Arrowverse.

Deathstroke has had a stroke of really bad luck in the DCEU. Joe Manganiello, who made a cameo in the Snyder Cut as Deathstroke, was set for Ben Affleck’s The Batman but never got a chance as the film was canceled permanently. However, there have been rumors of Robert Pattinson’s The Batman introducing many villains, one of them being Deathstroke.

According to Giant Freakin Robot The Batman will be teasing Mr. Freeze for the future. Riddler, Catwoman, and The Penguin will be involved. Supposedly the film will be set on Earth-Two, and therefore not in the same universe as Justice League.

The Suicide Squad will mark the beginning of a new era for DCEU and still has a month before it releases in theatres and on HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
