If you’re a fan of Netflix’s Daredevil, it may have been a little jarring to see Matt Murdock in a completely new suit. All with Jen making fun of Matt’s daring “mustard and ketchup” combination, it was clearly the show’s way of planting an Easter egg and delivering some fan service.
So, what’s the significance of this suit?
Daredevil’s red-and-gold suit in She-Hulk Ep 8 doesn’t seem to have any technological upgrades. Rather, it is an Easter egg about the comic-accurate version of the suit that pays tribute to Matt’s father.
In the comics, Daredevil’s father, Jack, was a boxer who would take bribes to either win or lose his matches. His boxing robe as well as the suit was red and golden in color. Inspired by his son, Jack later gave up playing dirty during his matches but it ultimately cost him his life.
In Daredevil’s early vigilante days, he made his own suit using his father’s boxing gear. This is why the suit is red and gold as well. Over the decades, he moves to other versions of the suit with more subtler colors.
Despite Matt’s father’s story being depicted in Netflix’s Daredevil, the show never adopted the golden-red suit.
Why did Daredevil get a new suit in She-Hulk?
First and foremost, I think this suit was simply supposed to be fanservice. The show could afford to make a brand-new suit for the character, so they decided to go old-school and give the fans the classic version.
Then if you want a more logical reason, there are a couple of things to consider: The Disney+ show wanted to distinguish itself from the Netflix series. Since it’s Daredevil’s first formal appearance in this universe, going with a comic-accurate look was a good decision.
Next, Marvel has confirmed that the Netflix shows are still canon in some form in the MCU. In Daredevil S3, Benjamin “Dex” Poindexter impersonated Daredevil by wearing his red suit and attacked several people, including The Bulletin, under this guise.
Because of this, in the series finale, Matt had to wear his homemade black costume which was first seen in Season 1. It is possible that due to these events, Matt had to get a new suit in color schemes chosen by She-Hulk’s Luke Jacobson.

Lastly, there is a chance that this is the red and gold suit’s first and last appearance. As per The Weekly Planet, for his appearance in Echo (releasing in 2023), Daredevil will go back to a new version of his black and red suit.
The character may also have a different suit for his own show, Daredevil: Born Again, which comes out in 2024. Guess Matt took Jen’s comment quite seriously!
