During Momo’s trip to a popular place for alien abductions, Okarun explores a tunnel famous for paranormal occurrences. The visits are disrupted when Momo gets kidnapped by aliens and Okarun is put under a curse by a ghost.

I. Is Dandadan on a break this week?

No, ‘Dandadan is not on a break this week. Episode 2 is not delayed and will be released on the above-stated date.

2. Episode 2 Speculation:

In Episode 1, it was evident that aliens and ghosts would play a significant role as the bad guys in the series, a refreshing break from the usual choice between the two. In the upcoming episode, Momo and Okarun will be delving further into the realm of supernatural and extraterrestrial beings very much against their will.

The first episode sets up the story: Momo is the only person able to prevent Okarun’s powers from controlling him (a clever narrative trick to keep the duo together). At the same time, the plot will progress with Okarun finding a way to remove the curse from Turbo Granny. Even more fascinating is the existence of budding romance amidst the unhinged circumstances.

Okarun will mainly concentrate on removing Turbo Granny’s curse and getting back what the curse has stolen from him (yikes). We can expect the central pair of Momo and Okarun to continue battling forces of each supernatural variety, and hopefully lifting Okarun’s curse along the way.

3. Recap of Episode 1

The first episode of Dandadan, “That’s How Love Starts, Ya Know!” immediately drags you into its bizarre world. After a literal violent breakup with her first boyfriend (her ex-boyfriend kicked her in the stomach and left her doubled over in pain?), Momo Ayase justifies her choice in men by telling her friends that she was with her ex despite his ways because he resembled Ken Takakura, a Japanese performer and singer whose birth name was Goichi Oda.

While walking through the halls with a heavy heart, Momo comes across “Occult-kun” (whose real name is a brilliant full-circle moment and is hands down the best punchline in the entire episode), a nerdy student who is being picked on, and decides to stand up for him. Inevitably, he confuses their basic interactions for genuine love and gets excited about their “common interest,” but Momo is uninterested and angrily lashes out at Occult-kun.

Momo quickly apologizes, but after a brief conversation, both realize their unconventional interests are on the opposite end of the spectrum. The two end up arguing about their supernatural beliefs – Momo comes from a family of spirit mediums, while Occult-kun is skeptical about ghosts but loves alien conspiracies.

Both of them completely ignore each other’s beliefs, resulting in a ridiculous wager to show the other person is wrong. Naturally, it turns out both ghosts and aliens are real – and it only snowballs from there

Each visit a hotspot of activity to prove the other wrong — Momo’s for ghosts, Occult-kun for aliens — to debunk each other’s beliefs. Momo’s on call with Occult-kun, or “Okarun,” while they explore their destinations and she points out how Okarun speaks much more bluntly on the phone, to which he replies that it’s easy to talk to her.

In a laughable twist, Momo gets abducted by lecherous extraterrestrials, Okarun is possessed by a grotesque granny spirit that threatens his masculinity in rather violent and actual ways, and after that, we step into uncharted territory (literally). The Serpoians, who are from the planet Serpo (obviously), are holding Momo hostage and planning on extracting her reproductive organs to bring genetic diversity to their all-male population that reproduces mainly through cloning. Momo tries her best to reject this, stating that she is reserving her purity for the Ken Takakura she has not yet encountered.

The Serpoians are interrupted when their phone rings, and they go to answer it. The realms of spirits and extraterrestrials intersect when Okarun (hexed by Turbo Granny) smashes into the UFO’s (or UAP’s) insides via Momo’s cellphone. The Serpoians reveal their true, frog-like forms as they prepare to fight.

Turbo Granny completely possesses Okarun’s body and starts battling, during which he admits his longstanding desire to encounter aliens as he believes they will befriend him due to his lack of real-life friendships.

Okarun thanks Momo for contacting him and says he will do anything, even become a monster, just to protect her. Momo remembers her grandmother’s words about releasing her chi, follows through with it, and unleashes spiritual abilities as a result.

While thanking her grandmother, Momo begins fighting the aliens, sending one flying out of their ship, which is revealed to be a fake moon. She then uses her powers to subdue Turbo Granny and restore Okarun’s sanity. The pair flee from the spaceship after it makes a crash landing on Earth.

Okarun apologizes to Momo for involving her before he decides to go confront Turbo Granny by himself, expressing his desire not to make things harder for her. Okarun then quotes a line from Ken Takakura, which catches Momo’s attention and makes her heart race.

What proves to be an absolute cinematic gold moment, Momo asks Okarun for his real name as she tries to get her heart to calm down, which he reveals to be Takakura Ken. This makes for a hilarious callback to Momo’s celebrity crush that drives her vision of romance and men. The information leaves her speechless as the episode comes to a close.
