Dan Harmon became a favorite among an entire generation of fans when he confirmed the making of the Community movie. A few months later, he declared it would lack two popular show details.
Community series gained massive popularity among fans between 2009-15 because of its perfect use of meta-humor, pop-culture references, and tributes to classic creatives of the day during its six-season run on Yahoo! and NBC.
Dan Harmon also paid tribute and helped fructify the famous slogan among fans about the franchise, which says, “six seasons and a movie”.
In an interview with Six Seasons & A Podcast, Harmon divulged that the fan-favorite homages won’t be a part of Community: The Movie.
While the fans are very pleased with the making of the film, they are a tad disappointed because we will not see our favorite study group playing Dungeons and Dragons or an intense game of Paintball.

For instance, we go, ‘Do we really think it’d be a good idea to be a paintball episode?’ It’s one of the first things to rule out because it’s the first thing off the top of your head, and that’s an issue with the ‘Community’ movie concept. We did a lot of episodes where you are joyfully locked into a construct that isn’t a traditional sitcom narrative, but is rather through the lens of David Fincher or Martin Scorsese. There were a lot of special episodes that were kind of like genre homages. The paintball thing was one of them. We tried to do a bunch more paintballs, and they were all perfectly wonderful things to do, but would anything ever capture the joy of the original paintball episode?
Everything We Know About the Upcoming Community Movie
The ‘six seasons and a movie’ slogan has been there with the fans of this franchise since time immemorial. In September, those desires were finally fulfilled by Sony Pictures TV and Peacock when they confirmed the filming of the Community movie.
The movie will likely come out as a streaming exclusive rather than a theatre release because of Peacock’s involvement in the production. Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, and Joel McHale have all confirmed their involvement as members of the famous study group in the show.
We will also see the return of Ken Jeong playing the infamous Spanish teacher, Ben Chang, and Jim Rash as Dean Craig Pelton. Other one-season stars like Keith David, who portrayed the intelligent Elroy Patashnik will also be a part of the movie.
Not all cast members will be there, though. There is a high possibility that we will not see Chevy Chase coming back as Pierce Hawthorne. She left the show in season 4 after an altercation with showrunner Dan Harmon. Also, Yvette Nicole still needs to confirm her part in the movie.
While Donald Glover’s situation seems a little doubtful, Dan Harmon has confirmed that he could not see the movie coming to life with the rapper/actor’s involvement.
As of now, Dan Harmon is still working on the script, and he has promised the fans that there won’t be any run-of-the-mill cliches or a story surrounding the opening or closing of Greendale Community College.
Given that the script has yet to be confirmed, an early 2023 release seems farfetched. The fans can expect the movie to release in 2024, according to our guesses!
