The great, mighty Bobby Axelrod has been brought down. Actor Damian Lewis says goodbye to the character as he departs the show.
The second half of Season 5 really took the plunge as it dared to dive into shocking alliances, triple crossings, elaborate schemes, and the ultimate end of Bobby’s reign.
Thanks to the plan plotted by Chuck, Taylor, and Mike, aided by their allies, Bobby was pushed into a corner with charges of illegal marijuana trade dealings.
In a last resort, Bobby pretends to step into a helicopter surrendering to the police, but it is, in fact, a getaway to take him to Switzerland where he will lay low after losing almost everything he valued — including his slow-building romance with Wendy Rhoades.
But according to show co-creators Brian Koppelman and David Levien, Bobby’s fall was years in the making. The pandemic had nothing to do with it, and it certainly wasn’t a knee-jerk decision.
The Bobby Axelrod billionaire archetype has been explored from all possible angles. It is only fitting to close the curtains on his story, which will help the show to dissect a different type of billionaire in the form of Mike Prince.
Mike has been presented as a kinder, more responsible version of Bobby and definitely one with a more ethical conscience. But Season 5 has already picked at the scab that Mike is not as clean as he seems.
“The central theme of the show has always been can anybody resist the temptation of that level of money and power? Can anybody remain even close to their true selves when that much money is at hand? In Season 6, Taylor’s not the only character who is face-to-face with that kind of temptation.”
Brian Koppelman
As per Koppelman, while Mike will be the central figure of Season 6, there are also other characters who will have their own reckoning after taking Bobby Axelrod down.
Damian Lewis takes to Twitter to bid adieu to his character, thanking the cast and crew for five incredible seasons of Billions. It is only deserving that the kudos go both ways, as Billions would not be the show it is without Lewis.
I’m sure fans are hoping that the billionaire megalomaniac makes a comeback one day, but it has been confirmed that Bobby Axelrod won’t be returning for Season 6.
Seeing Bobby finally smile as he steps into Switzerland makes me think he does need this break and venture into uncharted territories. As for Lewis, higher praise cannot be bestowed — he will be missed!
