Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay is something that has been on everybody’s mind these days. More importantly, will Cyberpunk 2077 feature a hybrid first and third person camera view or not.
The storyline of Cyberpunk 2077 puts you in the shoes of V, a mercenary making their way through Night City. However, the twist is that you can create your version of V, be it male or female, customization is the name of the game.
This takes a different approach from CDPR’s last title, the Witcher 3, where you only played as Geralt. Still, Witcher 3 was a third-person game, and it also featured an open world like Cyberpunk 2077.
Will CD Projekt Red keep up with the same trend and feature a third-person mode in Cyberpunk 2077.
1. What Camera Mode will Cyberpunk 2077 Fetaure?
Cyberpunk 2077 will exclusively be playable in first-person mode only. Meaning that you will not be able to choose from third-person and the first-person mode; instead, you will only be limited to the first-person camera view.
After the release of quite a few trailers, CD Projekt Red’s global community lead Marcin Momot released the info on Twitter:
This decision is not quite conventional as most open-world games like Grand Theft Auto, MAFIA feature third-person camera mode and offers the optional switch to first camera mode.
According to CDPR, this decision is not just based on breaking away from tradition but following their vision for Cyberpunk 2077.
2. Why is Cyberpunk 2077 First-Person Mode Only?
Patrick Mills, Quest Designer at CDPR, explains that the game designers’ primary objective was that the players should feel like they are in control of their character.
The developers wanted the players to feel like they are in the shoes of their character. The first-person camera view was the only way to achieve the same. The first-person mode also offers complete immersion, which is very important for a game that focuses on details.
“Additionally, you have a greater immersion, and we can do some environmental stuff from first-person that you wouldn’t be able to do in third-person. If nothing else, I think it’s going to be cool when you’re walking around the city, and you look up, which is something that in third-person doesn’t feel right. To experience that verticality, you need a first-person perspective.”
Mills
It is indeed true that Cyberpunk 2077’s attention to detail is something the designers would want to flaunt to their players. First-person is the way to go to promote the intricate details.
For me, there’s nothing like walking into a room in first-person camera mode and just explore the place, noticing every bit of detail in there.
On the one hand, first, camera-mode has its advantages, but will we see the player that we customized in the game?
3. How To View Your Character in First-Person Mode?
Cyberpunk 2077 will allow the players to view their characters in the Inventory menu, driving sequences, in environmental objects like mirrors, and not to mention the cutscenes.
The environment will be a fun place to explore, with little additions like mirror and shiny surfaces being the places of interest as you catch a glimpse of your character.
4. Will Cyberpunk 2077 Add A Third Person Mode?
Adding a whole camera mode is not something you can do with a patch update as it requires the game to be built around the same idea. Nonetheless, people on Reddit did petition CDPR to include a third-person mode. Given how close we are to release, that is most likely a dead end.
CD Projekt Red will not include a third person mode to Cyberpunk in 2077 as they have already confirmed that the game will be first-person only.
For me, I think the developers are on the right track. Many games like Far Cry, Deus Ex Mankind did follow the same path and executed the decision with near perfection. Cyberpunk 2077 shall not be any different.
5. About Cyberpunk 2077
Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.
Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
