After last year’s cleanup of CW shows, the media broadcast company has more cancellations ahead of it in 2023. After Nexstar bought 75% of the CW in 2022, many shows got the axe instead of a usual renewal, and now the parent company wants to further minimize the number of scripted shows on the channel.
According to a report by THR (via ScreenRant), the CW will be picking up less than “five US scripted originals” since Nexstar’s new regime wants to “shift the business model to profitability.” Nexstar has already turned profits after WarnerMedia, and Paramount couldn’t crack it, so we know it’s a wise decision – but what does this mean for our favorite shows?
All American has already been renewed, so we know it’s safe from getting canceled. Other shows that are doing well so far are Walker and The Winchesters, so we can bet on their renewal as well. But plenty of other shows won’t have the same fate.
The Arrowverse will end in the first half of 2023, with The Flash wrapping up its ninth season and the entire Earth-Prime universe. But the ongoing show Superman & Lois and the upcoming series Gotham Knights, which are not part of the Arrowverse, fall in the red zone, even though the latter has planned for more than one season.
Other shows like Nancy Drew, Riverdale, and Kung Fu are also staring down the bullet, ready to be shot down since their ratings have been average, if not bad.
With the network trying to build a new image and maintain profitability, CW will carry over minimal media from other networks and work on a handful of shows.
CW and Nexstar have not yet commented on this report, so there’s still hope. But we’d advise you to enjoy your favorites while they last since the cancellation spree has just begun.
