A few days ago, the YouTube channel of Apogee Software released Crystal Caves HD’s trailer, a light remake of the original 1991 platformer, to positive reception.
This month has sure been bringing us all doses of nostalgia one after another, hasn’t it?
I think this is especially true for those that have been playing games since the 90s era of gaming. It’s even true for the people that perhaps played these games during their childhood later on.
I lie in the latter group of people, and anyone who may have read my previous stuff knows of this all too well!
Not to mention, to further cement what I’m saying with the month giving us one big nostalgia ride, here are a couple of examples.
A few days ago, Remedy entertainment also announced that their first game, Death Rally, will now be permanently free on Steam!
id Software and Bethesda, too, haven’t held back when it comes to the Classic DOOM’s Port.
They’ve been working continuously to bring it up to player’s expectations and have, this month only, added a couple of new features to the game as well!
But there’s one special genre that had captured many people’s hearts back then; it was the platforming video games!
After all, these were the games that dominated the industry, with games like Mario, Sonic, and Castlevania being leagues above the rest.
However, many of these gems of video games were locked behind the consoles for which they were made. As such, many people, especially PC players, found themselves longing for these titles.
But, even then, there were still a few platformers that came for PC only, and for PC-only people, this was everything they needed back then.
For PC, platform games such as Commander Keen and Monster Bash are some of the few games that people still fondly remember, but one game was also just as great.
It was the one that was seemingly lost in the annals of history, only to make a return now, almost three decades later!
That game was Crystal Caves, which is now all set to receive an HD overhaul, to stand tall once more as one of the prime PC platformers of gaming history!
What will the HD version be like?
Judging from the trailer alone that was released on the 11th of this month, it seems that the game will be receiving a milder, more realized color palette, as compared to the EGA one used in the original.
The game’s overall visuals also appear to have been sharpened up a bit, with significant improvements to the frame-rate as well.
Apart from that, the two biggest additions would be Episode 4, an entirely new episode for players to get their hands on, and the Steam workshop support, meaning that players will be able to create their levels for the game as well!
But, and perhaps the biggest thing for the Crystal Caves HD to worry about at the moment would be the competition.
Since Crystal Caves’ initial release, the gaming industry has seen many 2D platformers for PC released to critical acclaim.
With modern masterpieces such as Celeste, Hollow Knight, and Ori now easily available to PC players, it’ll be certainly interesting to see how the grand-daddy of these games hold up in the current generation!
About Crystal Caves HD
Crystal Caves is a side-scrolling platforming video game, developed and published by Apogee Software in December, 1991.
The remake of the game, titled Crystal Caves HD, will feature updated visuals and frame-rates along with an entirely new episode, that was not present in the original game.
However, the premise of the game has remained unchanged. All you have to do is help Mylo, the greatest miner ever, reach his burger joint once more by overcoming different obstacles and enemies riddled in his path!
The remake is yet to receive a proper release date, but is expected to be out pretty soon!
