Adam Sandler’s Upcoming Family Comedy on Netflix Wins Over Critics

Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix comedy, You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, has received positive reviews from critics and fans.

The film is based on the 2005 YA novel by Amanda Stern and features Sandler’s wife Jackie and daughters Sunny and Sadie in the cast. The film is the second of Sandler’s three Netflix projects in 2023, following Murder Mystery 2 in March and preceding Leo, an animated film, in November.

The film stars Sandler’s daughters along with Samantha Lorraine as three friends who plan a bat mitzvah party. Critics have praised the performances of the young actors, as well as the humor and heart of the film.

Frank Scheck from THR mentioned that the film will most likely appeal more to a younger audience. Read an excerpt from his review below:

Fortunately, the rampant nepotism on display has resulted in a sweet, amusing film geared toward younger audiences, who will best relate to the main character’s personal travails as she prepares for the film’s main event. – Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

Pete Hammond from Deadline also had many good things to say about the movie. In his review, he mentions –

Give huge credit to Sunny Sandler for being the real deal, a hugely talented young performer who hits all the right notes and is a natural in front of the camera. This is no cheap trick of nepotism. It is hard to imagine a better choice for the role of Stacy, a girl going through big, life-changing moments and trying to hang on to what really ultimately matters. In the other major teen role as her bestie, Lorraine could not be better. Both make it look like they really have been friends their whole lives.

Many other notable critics have showered praises on the upcoming family comedy. Colin Mcatee of Vigour Times says that the film “skillfully captures the roller coaster of emotions experienced in eighth grade.” The film talks about trying to fit in with the cool kids, which can quickly turn into humiliation, and long-standing crushes can be forgotten in an instant. It showcases the absurdity and the devastating impact these experiences can have on teenagers.

Courtney Howard from Variety mentions that though Adam Sandler, tackling the role of caring dad, and Jackie Sandler, playing Lydia’s spendthrift mom, bring a sense of sweetness and amusement, this is really their daughters’ show.

Howard further notes that the Sandler sisters Sunny and Sadie are “compelling performers”. The camera and dialogue capture the genuine, natural ease of their sisterly bond, whether they’re playfully teasing or placating one another.

Fred Topel from UPI says in his review that You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah should appeal to people at any age in any family. It is the kind of movie that can stick with young viewers and have them quote it for the rest of their lives.

In other words, the film has mostly incited positive reactions from critics who have praised the film for its treatment of teenage problems, great performances and the ability to connect to its target audience.

Adam Sandler has been collaborating with Netflix since 2016, when he released The Ridiculous 6, the first of his many movies for the streaming service. Although he has received acclaim for his dramatic roles, such as in the 2022 film Hustle, most of his Netflix comedies have been criticized by reviewers and compared unfavorably to his earlier hits.

Adam Sandler has shown his versatility and talent as an actor in his recent dramatic roles, which have earned him critical acclaim. You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah also indicates that he can produce a different kind of humor than his usual slapstick style.
