Creed III has surpassed the box office collections of all but one of its predecessors in the franchise.
This movie, directed by Michael B. Jordan, is the third installment of the Creed series and a spinoff of the Rocky franchise.
Creed III smashed the opening weekend box office record for its franchise and the entire sports film genre when it was released on March 3.
The plot of Creed III revolves around the fight between Adonis Creed, played by Michael B. Jordan, and a new opponent, Jonathan Majors.
According to Collider, the movie’s box office earnings have continued to impress, even three weeks after the premiere.
The movie has now surpassed the $200 million mark globally after reaching $100 million in just one week.
This places it as the second highest-grossing film in the nine-part franchise, lagging only behind Creed II from 2018, which earned $214.2 million.
Although Creed III has achieved tremendous success at the box office, there appears to be a slight inconsistency in the figures.
Furthermore, the box office landscape was vastly different when the Rocky franchise began almost 50 years ago.
It’s worth noting that the original five Rocky films were released before Rocky Balboa went international and box office releases were rare. So, most or all of their earnings would come from domestic box office revenue.
Additionally, the box office totals still need to be adjusted for inflation.
Nevertheless, Creed III has exceeded everyone’s expectations for sure.
Several factors can be attributed to the film’s triumph, such as the inclusion of three famous stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Jordan, Majors, and Tessa Thompson) and the massive success of Creed II.
It’s common for a film’s first sequel to earn more than its predecessor, but third sequels historically struggle to match that level of success.
This pattern is evident in previous third sequels such as Scream 3 and Shrek the Third.
Furthermore, even though some Marvel actors have a proven record of box office success, this doesn’t always guarantee a hit.
For example, Jonathan Majors, who had a prominent role in the Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, could not replicate that success in his recent outing with Creed III.
Given these circumstances, the success of the Creed sequel is genuinely remarkable.
