The arson at the “Kyoto Animation Studio,” occurring on July 18, 2019, will remain a scar on the face of Japan’s anime industry. Over the past ten years, Japan has rarely seen an instance of “suicidal terrorism” on such a large scale.

The Kyoto Animation Studio 1 building was set on fire by a man by the name of Shinji Aoba, who left 36 people dead and over 30 injured. It was the most significant case of arson in Japanese history in the modern era and the bloodiest mass murder in the country since the Kabukicho fire of 2001.

On January 25, 2024, the Kyoto District Court sentenced Aoba to death, finding him guilty of murder and arson.

Aoba stated that he attacked the studio because he thought they had plagiarized his novels, which he had submitted to a contest organized by the company.  But neither the police nor the corporation would acknowledge having worked with him in the past.

Following his recovery from the terrible burns he received during the incident, Aoba was placed under arrest in May 2020.

Pretrial hearings for the arson murder case began in May 2023, and the main trial began in September 2023 at the Kyoto District Court. In all, the court held 32 hearings.

The defense claimed that Aoba lacked the mental capacity to stand trial, but the court rejected this claim, ruling instead that Aoba had planned the attack ahead of time and knew the implications. In addition, the court declared that Aoba had no remorse and should have received the worst penalty possible for his horrible deed.

KyoAni, short for Kyoto Animation, is a famous anime studio that has created many beloved and praised works, such as ‘K-On!,’ ‘Clannad,’ and ‘Violet Evergarden.’ The studio is admired for its stunning animation, skilled staff, and friendly work culture.
