Sometimes, less is more, and this week’s episode of Couple of Cuckoos was the equivalent of lightly salted potato chips, crisp to perfection but without the unrelenting spice.
Amano finally ends up confessing to Hiro, only to find out that she is engaged to somebody as well. Rather than having us dwell on the obvious setup for some classic drama, we are welcomed to a wholesome meeting between two sisters getting to know each other for the first time.
Episode 5 Speculations
The nature of this show demands drama, the fact that we got some time off to let off some steam and enjoy the wholesomeness is merely an indicator of something to absolutely explode in the next episode.
We know for a fact that Hiro is engaged to somebody, but we haven’t been told who it is right now. If I was to guess, then I would say that it might just end up being Amano.
Sachi has finally met with her sister Erika. The two now seem to be good friends, but that meeting seems to have awakened something in Sachi that wasn’t quite there before. This might mean Sachi could be joining the rat race pretty soon.

Episode 4 Recap
The fourth episode begins with Amano getting the first rank in the school, beating Hiro. He has finally proven his point and is looking for an opportunity to confess to her, but before he can do anything, Hiro invites him to the roof to have a chat.
It is there that Amano finally confesses to her. She is surprised but does not even process the confession as he hasn’t exactly proven himself smarter than her as she has topped him in almost ten other instances.
Amano realizes he still has a chance, but Hiro does not take very kindly to that challenge as they start racing down to the classroom, competing over silly things.
Amano wins the race, and Hiro admits defeat. She then chooses to drop the bombshell that she cannot date him because she is already engaged to somebody.
The news catches Amano by surprise, who spends the next moments rolling around in his bed contemplating her words since she hadn’t exactly told him to whom she was engaged.
His conundrum is broken by Erika barging in to remind him to pack his things up in order to leave since the two weeks are over. They have a little chat, and Amano leaves for his place while Erika supposedly waits for her ride.
A shut door welcomes Amano as his mother tells him that the plumbing in their house went whack and their current accommodation is too crammed to have another person.
Defeated, he goes back to the house he was in only to find Erika over there. She had faked going home to try and live alone but had miserably failed at it.
Since Amano had to live there for longer, he had asked his sister (or, well, Erika’s sister), Sachi, for supplies. She personally comes down to their place to meet her blood-related sister for the first time.
The two are awkward, so Amano takes it upon himself to help them as he tries to get the two cooking together, an activity that ends in disaster. Amano had to cook the karaage (fried chicken) himself.
He points out how similar the two girls are, Erika then takes the initiative as her elder sister and takes Sachi to her room to try out some clothes. It turns out that the two are rather compatible as they get friendly with each other very quickly.
After a commemorative photo, Sachi goes back to her current accommodation. The meeting makes her realize that she is a grown-up herself and can make decisions on her own now.
While we have the mystery of who it is that she is engaged to, we also have a rebellious Sachi. Now all of this with the chemistry between Erika and Amano grows steadily, it seems like a storm is brewing, and an especially violent one at that.

A Couple of Cuckoos or Cuckoo’s Fiance is a manga by Miki Yoshiwara. It was launched in January 2020 in the Weekly Shounen Magazine.
Nagi and Erika were switched at birth and never knew their real parents. On the day that Nagi was supposed to meet his natural parents, he encounters Erika and is roped into helping her out of an arranged marriage.
Both of them pretend to be girlfriend and boyfriend only to realize later that they are actually fated to marry each other.
