When we got the God of War reboot in 2018, little did we know that we would be experiencing what would go on to become a masterpiece in gaming. Cut to 2022, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the sequel to Kratos and Atreus’ adventures in the Norse realms. God of War Ragnarok is easily one of the most anticipated games for the PlayStation 5 in 2022, but will it come to the PC platform as its predecessor? Cory Barlog, Creative Director for God of War 2018, was asked this very question.
In an interview with Game Informer, Barlog didn’t have any good news to share with the PC gaming community. When asked if PlayStation and Sony Santa Monica had any plans to bring God of War Ragnarok sooner than the four years it took to port the first game, Barlog said he had “no idea.” While this is not a definitive no, it is also not the confirmation that PC gamers were hoping for, as they would have already experienced the reboot’s first installment.
According to him, Sony is taking the release “one game at a time.” He mentioned how each game is considered on how well it does on initial launch and whether enough people enjoy it to warrant a port to another platform. Now, given the massive appeal of the game, it would be a safe bet to assume God of War Ragnarok will be received well, so it’s a bit strange to mention that point.
The final word Barlog had on the matter was that it was entirely up to Sony whether God of War Ragnarok would be brought to PC and how long this port would take. Given the track record of exclusive PlayStation ports, they do take a while, and little can be done to expedite them.
If Ragnarok was coming to the PC, Barlog would undoubtedly know. However, his attention is also divided between the release of Ragnarok and the development of the new Santa Monica project. The 2018 God of War PC port was handled by third-party developer Jetpack Interactive, with Santa Monico providing oversight.
It appears that, for now, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 release of God of War Ragnarok is a priority. Once the game has launched, other factors would decide if the game has performed according to Sony’s expectations and validate the need for a PC port. If Sony believes the game could help keep consoles up, then there is no reason to create a port.
