July 20th saw the very first beta release of Amazon Games’ MMORPG New World.
While the beta did have some performance and GPU-related issues, it was a tremendous success from a concurrent players standpoint clocking over 200,000 players in under a week.
The number mentioned above indicates that fans were impressed with what they saw, but a new update concerning the game might dent those sentiments.
As per the game’s Twitter account, the MMORPG will not be getting official controller support at launch.
First spotted by Can I Play That, a player named Brian Torsey stated, “I use a controller for most games because of issues with my neck that make me use my computer in a reclined position.
I noticed they work for movement and basic things. I really hope they will work natively at launch.”
To this, New World had the following response:
Lack of controller support at launch should come as a surprise to many as, until March 2021, when pre-orders went live, plans for controller support were entirely in place.
But now, New World is recommending using third-party software for gamepad support if needed.
The game’s Twitter also mentioned that while New World will not fully support controllers at launch, all of the game’s inputs are re-bindable and are compatible with most accessibility control devices.
So, maybe modders could put such functionality to good use.
While New World is exclusive to PC, many other cross-platform MMO titles like The Elder Scrolls Online come with native controller support where all you have to do is plug in your controller and play.
But for some reason, Amazon is neglecting to include this helpful feature in their very first game.
What’s more, devs have also delayed the game by a few weeks to incorporate feedback received during beta testing. So, they have the time needed to include controller support, but currently, they’re choosing not to, which is strange.
Controller support has gained significance in the past couple of years. It is no more a feature enjoyed just by those who don’t enjoy playing with a mouse and keyboard as it provides more accessibility to those with disabilities.
Let’s hope Amazon listens to all this additional feedback and reconsiders its stance on controller support for New World.
