Matt Ryan will be returning to The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, but not as John Constantine.
It turns out the actor will be switching roles for the show’s seventh season, bidding goodbye to the fan-favorite Constantine in S6, which will conclude in September. Ryan and executive producer Phil Klemmer made the announcement on Sunday during their Comic-Con@Home panel.
As everyone who loves him knows, in the end, John Constantine will walk his path alone. The time has come for John to part ways with the Legends and for me to part ways with John.
I’m really excited to be creating this new role on the show and having some fun with it — discovering how this new character fits in and causes some trouble for the Legends.
Matt Ryan
Ryan first played the detective in NBC’s Constantine for a single season in 2014-15. Constantine later appeared in an episode of Arrow in 2015. Ryan first joined Legends of Tomorrow as a recurring guest star and became a regular from its fourth season.
The character that Ryan will play instead in season seven is named Dr. Gwyn Davies, an eccentric scientist from the early 20th century who might be the team’s only hope.
The Comic-Con panel also revealed a new trailer for the upcoming episodes of the current season.
Season 6 has currently hit pause due to the 2020 Toyko Summer Olympics and will resume on the CW on August 8, 2021. Season 7 won’t be far behind as it is set to premiere on October 13, 2021.
From time to time, other actors from Legends of Tomorrow have played multiple characters as well. Maisie Richardson-Sellers played Amaya Jiwe/Vixen in S2 and S3 and then played the shape-shifter, Charlie, in S4 and S5, who takes Amaya’s form. Tala Ashe plays Zari Tomaz and Zari Tarazi, two versions of one character from different timelines. Brandon Routh played the Atom and Superman due to the DC Multiverse.
It would be interesting to see how the show explains why the new character of Dr. Davis looks like John Constantine.
This move might also be due to Constantine getting his own HBO Max series. The HBO Max series is expected to tie in with the upcoming Justice League Dark series by JJ Abrams and the Zatanna film.
