Francis Lawrence made his directorial debut with the 2005 film Constantine starring Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz, Shia Lebouf, Tilda Swinton, and more. His movie may have only gotten him a soft hit at the box office with mixed reviews, but the film has since achieved cult status.
And now, nearly after two decades, the film is getting a sequel with Keanu Reeves returning as the charming demon hunter. Lawrence confirms Reeves’ return and even shares an update on where the sequel’s script stands.
WB had considered making a sequel film or series after noticing that its gaining traction in the years after its release among the DC fandoms. Recently, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that a sequel was in the works, with Lawrence sitting again at the director’s chair and Akiva Goldsman leading the writer’s table.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, Lawrence commented on the movie’s update and how Reeves, Goldman, and himself have been “trying over the years” to get the sequel going. The director explained that the character’s rights were tangled within the “DC/Vertigo world,” thus delaying it, but that all has been resolved.
We don’t have a script, but Keanu, me, and Akiva [Goldsman], who all worked on the first one together, have been trying to get another one going over the years. It’s been tricky because of the DC/Vertigo world and who owns the character and who has control over the characters, trying to get the right people to go forward. We’ve got that now, and now we need the story. We’d all love to do it.
Since the film doesn’t have a script yet, we have no idea what the plot could be. But the comics have an abundance of stories for Constantine, and the upcoming sequel can even explore the original film’s subplots.
Keanu Reeves’ Constantine, the titular character, was a reimagined version of the DC comics wizard who traipses through earth and hell, ridding the world of the deadliest demons. We knew he couldn’t have just ended up with one adventure!
Reeves is on a roll with new instalments of his biggest hits in theaters again, but that also means his schedule is quite packed. Goldsman is currently also swamped with writing for a few bigshot films, including the Hunger Games prequel.
Suffice to say, Constantine 2 is definitely happening, but the going will be slow, and we can’t know for sure when we will get to see the paranormal hunter back on his feet.
But we’ll be sure to follow any updates about Constantine 2 and keep you in the loop!
