In Black Myth: Wukong, the optional boss, Guangzhi, can be found in the Forest of Wolves section of chapter one. Guangzhi isn’t super-fast, but his scorched polearms strike with lightning speed. Fortunately, his attacks follow a predictable pattern, allowing you to learn and exploit the brief moments when he’s vulnerable.

Avoid getting hit by the scorched polearms, as they can set you on fire. If you get hit multiple times and catch fire, dodge constantly until the flames go out. Be extra cautious of the Charged Dash Slashes and Extended Fire Combo, as they can be fatal if your health is low.

By understanding where each attack ends, you can find safe openings to counterattack without taking damage.

Beyond the boss, choose the western path between two stone pillars and continue on the road until you reach an entrance marked by a head statue. Inside, you’ll find Guangzhi waiting for you at the center of the area.

Defeating bosses in Black Myth: Wukong requires a deep understanding of their attack patterns. By anticipating their moves, you’ll gain control of the fight.

AttackDescription
Swipe ComboGuangzhi unleashes a swift two-part combo, swinging his double-bladed polearm in a wide arc, aiming to catch you off guard.
Ground PoundThis three-part attack begins with Guangzhi propelling himself into the air using his polearm, followed by a high-flying leap, and culminating in a devastating fire-infused ground-pound attack that causes a massive explosion.
Extended Fire ComboGuangzhi initiates a flurry of attacks, using his polearm to unleash a series of overhead and frontal swings, typically consisting of four to five hits.
Backing Up Spear ThrowWhen pressured, Guangzhi may fall back while executing a double swipe, concealing a fast, non-tracking spear throw. The spear spins less and moves quicker than his initial throw attack, dealing damage on both the outgoing and returning trajectory. Dodge to the left or right to avoid.
Spinning TornadoGuangzhi begins by performing a summersault to the left, signaling the start of a spinning attack. He will then come spinning across the screen, twirling his flaming spear, and follow up with a single spear swing, requiring precise timing to dodge.
Pole VaultGuangzhi sticks his spear into the ground, assumes a flag-like position, and spins through the air, attempting to impale you. He will repeat this attack two more times, finishing with a swipe upon dismounting. You can interrupt him during this attack and follow up with a freeze to punish him.
Charged Dash SlashesIf Guangzhi pauses with his spear held behind him, pointing straight up, he is preparing to charge forward. This quick dash attack has two parts, with the second dealing more damage. You can let the first part hit and save your dodge for the follow-up attack.

3. Preparing For Battle

Guangzhi wields a dual-sided flaming polearm, unleashing fierce attacks. His moves are largely predictable, often coming in sets of three. By observing his patterns for a short time, you can anticipate major combos and seize opportunities to counterattack.

Before facing Guangzhi, consider preparing by:

  • Defeating enemies to accumulate Sparks.
  • Unlocking Foundation and Staff skills from the ‘Self-Advance’ menu.
  • Focusing on the starting Smash Stance.
  • Acquiring skills like Resolute Counterflow and Force Unbound to gain an advantage.

The challenge lies in the fight’s early placement, limiting your attack options. However, equipping a Spirit and acquiring an early-game skill can significantly impact the outcome. Feel free to return to this fight later if you’re under-leveled.

4. Combat Tactics

Guangzhi initiates combat with a charge, followed by consecutive jumping spin attacks from opposite directions. You can disrupt these by jumping over them.

  • Charge your heavy attack using both Focus Points to stagger the boss.
  • Utilize your Immobilize spell when close to Guangzhi to save time and quickly land attacks.
  • Roll three times if caught on fire to extinguish it.
  • Dodge three swipes and then land a heavy attack.
  • Be cautious of delayed attacks, as dodging too hastily may leave you vulnerable to his follow-up strikes.

At half-health, Guangzhi unleashes a new, aggressive aerial move set without warning, featuring:

  • Aerial Spin: Guangzhi launches himself upward, air-dashes low, and spins towards you. Dodge him and counter with heavy attacks.
  • Two Swipes and Dash: Staggering attack, save Immobilize for this, then counter with heavy attacks.

Overcommitting means instant death. His retreats are often a ploy to lure you into a devastating spin, dash, or throw. Don’t spam dodge or heavy attacks, as these will get you killed. Instead, time your actions carefully to win.

Upon defeating Guangzhi, interact with the scorched polearms to unlock the Red Tides spell in Black Myth Wukong. This spell allows your character to transform into Guangzhi, inheriting some of his moves, like:

  • Light attack: Moon Dance
  • Heavy attack: Moon Chase

It’s important to note that transformation requires a full Might gauge.

  • During transformation, the Might bar depletes slowly but landing heavy and special attacks speeds up the depletion.
  • Additionally, de-transformation occurs when the Might gauge is empty, or the transformed guai’s health is depleted due to damage.
  • You can also manually trigger de-transformation if needed.

Overall, unlocking the Red Tides spell and transforming into Guangzhi can be a powerful tool in your arsenal, offering new attacks and abilities to take down enemies.

May your path be illuminated by wisdom, courage, and triumph, Destined One!
