Enola Holmes is back with her second case! She takes to the bustling streets of industrial London to help her client find her sister. Of course, she also must prove her worth as a new detective wrestling against the popularity of her brother, Sherlock.
The markers of any good period drama are the sets and costumes. Just like the first film, Enola Holmes 2 has finessed these avenues and recreated its Victorian setting to perfection.
Enola Holmes 2 was filmed completely in the UK. Some of its primary filming locations were Kingston upon Hull, Dorchester, Wapping, and London.
I know you’d love to get into more detail about these locations, so I’ve got you covered!
1. Kingston upon Hull
Enola Holmes 2 begins with the young detective being chased by the police. As we come to find out, she’s being wrongly charged with murder.
This scene, along with others that portray the streets of London, was actually filmed in Kingston upon Hull. In particular, The High Street, Scale Lane, Bishops Lane, Guildhall, Land of Green Ginger, and Chapel Lane were used for the film.
Here are more photos of the city being transformed for the movie, courtesy of some local fans.
2. Dorchester
Dorchester Prison in Dorset has been closed since 2013 but was re-opened in 2021 as a filming site for Enola Holmes 2. The film does have quite a few prison scenes that could’ve been shot here. It is possible that other parts of the institute were also used in the film.
Working under the alias movie title “Street Dogs,” the cast and crew also used a room above Dorchester’s Corn Exchange in High East Street as their green room.
3. Wapping
The film’s events are inspired by the real-life Matchgirls’ Strike in opposition to the Bryant & May factory. In true homage, the match factory scenes were set in Wapping, in another factory close to the Bryant & May one.
This was a great decision as the factory had retained all its working stations and allowed the film to be even more authentic. Production designer Michael Carlin also found pieces from the Bryant & May factory that they could use in the movie.
4. Chatham
It is truly an empowering moment when the matchgirls finally walk out of the factory. This scene was not filmed in Wapping with the rest of the factory scenes, but instead at the historic dockyard at Chatham.
Coincidently, the 2009 Sherlock Holmes film also used this location!
5. Halton House
Enola goes snooping at the Lyon Ball where she also receives dance lessons from her paramour, Tewkesbury. These scenes were filmed in Halton House in Buckinghamshire. The house was built in 1883 by Alfred de Rothschild of the Rothschild international banking dynasty.
6. Shepperton Studios
If you were amazed by the vibrancy of The Paragon Music Hall, know that it took quite a while to build! After 12 weeks, Shepperton Studios was transformed into the music hall where Sarah and Mae worked, and where the extremely terrifying confrontation with Grail and McIntyre took place.
7. London
Last but not the least, some scenes were indeed filmed in London, which is the primary setting of the movie.
Some recognizable locations are the Old Royal Naval College on King William Walk, Fournier Street in the Spitalfields area, and The Royal Oak gastropub at 73 Columbia Road.
8. About Enola Holmes 2
