On April 12, as the Hollywood industry grieved the loss of comedian and actor Gilbert Gottfried, someone hacked his Twitter account and posted a row of lewd messages.
Gottfried passed away at 67 due to a rare muscle illness. The actor’s family announced his demise via his Twitter account. They even requested fans to “keep laughing as loud as possible in Gilbert’s honor” despite it being a mournful day.
The actor left behind a legacy with iconic works under his belt—works that shaped an entire generation.
People were disappointed when they found inappropriate tweets from the actor’s account—@RealGilbert. The tweets promoted a po*n star’s OnlyFans account and requested bitcoins.
The hacker even changed the bio to claim that he had spent multiple years in prison.
Twitter temporarily disabled Gottfried’s account. The tweets made by the hacker were deleted, too. Take a look at some screenshots from users below.
At one time, the hacker blamed an account on Instagram and claimed that they hacked it. The Daily Dot’s writer Mikael Thalen contacted the user and shared that it was a setup.
Twitteratis didn’t spare the hacker. They bashed them for being inconsiderate towards Gottfried.
Gottfried was recognized widely for his contribution to Disney’s 1992 animated feature film, Aladdin, by bringing Iago, the parrot, to life.
His style of crude humor was loved by many, and he remains one of the most influential comedians in Hollywood. Gottfried shone brightly as a prolific comedian on Hollywood Squares, Comedy Central Roast, and Saturday Night Live, among other projects.
Meanwhile, condolences poured in from worldwide as everyone mourned the loss of the comedian/actor, from industry stars to the general audience.
Gottfried’s friend, comedian, and editor Emery Emery shared a teaser of their upcoming project, Science Friction, to which Gottfried lent his voice. It probably is one of the last projects Gottfried participated in.
