Colin Farrell plays Oswald Cobblepot, better known as “Penguin” in the Robert Pattinson version of The Batman. The actor reveals that he has all but nine minutes of screen time in the entire film.
Farrell was in conversation with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he went into details about his experience, including how production was halted because Batman (Pattinson) got Covid! A tiny snippet of the same is shared by Josh Horowitz on Twitter.
Farrell went through a tremendous transformation for his role as Penguin, right up to being unrecognisable to other cast members on set. To get into character he had to gain weight, with an add-on of prosthetics and make up.
In the comics, Penguin is known to be a defaced crime lord. But Farrell’s Penguin starts off a little early in his life story, where he is still very uncomfortable with transitioning into “The Gentleman of Crime.”
One piece of information that may surprise us (or prepare us for the movie) is that Farrell’s time on screen will be very limited. He states that he had about five to six scenes in total that would amount to approximately nine minutes — of course, subject to film’s editing and pace.
I’m only in it for five or six scenes, so I can’t wait to see the film because it won’t be ruined by my presence. It’s a freebie for me, I get a little bit uncomfortable for the f***ing nine minutes I have and the rest I cannot wait to see how he brought this world to life. Because the sets were extraordinary, the production design was extraordinary, and his use of music and sound will be extraordinary. And as you said the cast, all of them from Robert to Zoe.

Farrell shouts out big praise for the cast, as Robert Pattinson adorns the Caped Crusader’s suit on Earth-2, with his faithful butler Alfred Pennyworth played by Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman.
From Farrell’s revelation, it seems that Pattinson’s Batman will be primarily facing only one big baddie on screen, that is Riddler played by Paul Dano.
Farrell jokes about how his limited time is all well and good, as his presence won’t butcher the overall plot. But while his appearance feels like an easter egg, we can’t forget that Penguin has been a long-time, calculative adversary for Batman.
Might Colin Farrell’s “teaser appearance” set the stage for more of Penguin to come? We certainly hope so.
