The DCEU may already have Ben Affleck’s Batman, but the recent caped crusader that has taken over the audience’s hearts is Robert Pattinson’s Batman, who starred as Bruce Wayne in the non-DCEU film.
Ben Affleck, DCEU’s Batman, was onboard the 2022 film as a producer and writer, and the film was originally supposed to be a solo venture in DCEU. But since then, it blew up at the box office and was commended for its plot, direction, action sequences, and actors’ performances.
The 2022 film starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, and Collin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. Other cast members included John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Barry Keoghan.
The 2022 film followed Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting Batman unraveling the corruption in Gotham PD while also trying to solve the puzzles of The Riddler. As he killed Gotham’s elite and left puzzles for Bruce to find, The Riddler challenged the detective within the Caped Crusader.
The film grossed $700+ million at the box office and a sequel was announced in April 2022 at CinemaCon, with Pattinson and Reeves having already signed on. However, no other actors have yet publicly disclosed any plans of coming back.
Now, we may have another addition to the sequel, with a major Batman villain reprising his role. In an interview with ET, Collin Farrell, who played Penguin in The Batman, said that he would love to come back if he was offered the opportunity.
Oh my god, you kidding me?! It’s so much fun are you joking [with] me? I’ve been around the block, man. That was an easy sport. I mean, it was a joy.
Before Farrell’s confirmation of his return, Paul Dano had also expressed his excitement to return as The Riddler in the sequel. Both the actors had delivered exceptional performances in the first film, and director Matt Reeves should rightly consider recasting their roles and bringing the iconic villains back.
While nothing is confirmed about Farrell’s return in the sequel, the first film only introduced the DC comics villain and set his path for a bigger arc, which will be explored in the Batman spinoff series already greenlighted by HBO.
