There are some patterns gamers have just gotten used to at this point: press X to jump, Mario stomps on Goombas, and that a new Call of Duty will hit the shelves every year.
But, a new leak regarding the next installment in the franchise may turn some fans away. A reliable leaker has stated that this year’s Call of Duty may be one of the more lackluster titles in the series.
We don’t have many details about the upcoming game, besides the fact that it will be based during World War 2 and the possibility that the name will be “Vanguard.”
Call of Duty: World War 2 was developed by Sledgehammer Games and came out in 2017 and got an overall low ranking for a CoD title. Cold War was also met with pretty lukewarm reviews, and it seems that Activision will have to rely on the popularity of Warzone for another year.
This info comes from Tom Henderson, a credible leaker for games like Call of Duty and Battlefield.
They posted a video onto their YouTube channel discussing the details about Vanguard‘s multiplayer and what kind of integration we can expect with Warzone.
During the video, Henderson says that according to his sources, Vanguard‘s online multiplayer “just isn’t going to be that great,” and said that it wouldn’t have too many unique elements and will pretty much be like a “Black Ops Cold War 2.0.”
The reason for this, allegedly, is that Sledgehammer Games did have several exciting ideas for the game, but a lot of those features were cut “for whatever reason,” making the game a generic Call of Duty title.
Henderson has stated that despite many fans suggesting that the next game will be very impressive due to the number of people working on it, Activision has actually shifted its devs and studios to develop Warzone and that “they are not working on Vanguard.”
If this is true, it shows that Activision is making concerted efforts to make Warzone updates a priority for the immediate future. This isn’t surprising given the game mode’s incredible popularity ever since its release.
It remains to be seen how Vanguard will integrate with Warzone and if support for the main franchise titles will be moved to the backburner to keep up a steady stream of fresh updates for the Battle Royale mode.
There’s no doubt that Warzone could easily carry the franchise for another year, especially with constant updates. Still, it is worrying that Activision seems to be letting their quality slip because of Warzone‘s popularity.
